Investigators have charged an Ontario man with impaired driving offences after calling police following a crash in Ottawa.

The incident started as a request for assistance to the OPP around 9:30 p.m. on April 29 after a driver broke down on the side of Highway 417 near Vanier, approximately 7 kilometres east of Ottawa.

Police say the male driver requested police attend for traffic control until a tow truck arrived. But investigators say the same driver had previously struck a sign in a hit-and-run crash in Ottawa.

Officers suspected the driver was impaired, and used a roadside screening device before taking the man for further screening.

The OPP says the 59-year-old male driver from Kemptville has been charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired – blood alcohol content 80 plus.

The accused had his licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The accused is scheduled to make a court appearance in Ottawa at a later date.

The OPP says anyone who witnesses a suspected impaired or unsafe driver can report it to police by calling 911 when safe to do so. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, never have to testify, and could receive a $2,000 reward.
