Montreal Port's Contrecoeur Terminal Construction Underway, Boosting Capacity 60% - News and Statistics

According to The Maritime Executive, Canada has initiated construction of the new Contrecoeur container terminal at the Port of Montreal. The project, first proposed roughly four decades ago, is anticipated to increase the port’s capacity by about sixty percent, representing the largest Atlantic coast port expansion in the nation’s history.

Prime Minister Mark Carney participated in the groundbreaking. The federal government, via the Canada Infrastructure Bank, has provided financing of US$839 million. Additional financial commitments include $94 million from the Government of Quebec and $108.5 million from Transport Canada.

The terminal is a priority for the government’s strategy to increase non-U.S. exports and diversify trade, with a focus on Asian markets. It will provide the shortest shipping route from North America’s industrial core to Europe and the Mediterranean. A Major Projects Office established in August of last year expedited approvals, developed financing, and secured permits.

The development includes two berths, a container handling area, a rail-connected marshalling yard, a road-connected truck gate, and other facilities. Initial in-water work, such as dredging, commenced in October of last year. A second phase is scheduled to start next year, with commercial operations aimed for 2030. DP World Canada has obtained a 40-year agreement to operate the terminal.

The Port of Montreal handles over 35 million tonnes of cargo and around 2,000 ship calls each year. It contributes nearly $72.3 billion to the economy annually and supports about 590,000 jobs.
