A man was airlifted to hospital in critical condition after a serious crash near schools in the Transcona area this weekend, Winnipeg police say.
Police and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the single-vehicle crash near Murdoch MacKay Collegiate early Sunday morning, Const. Claude Chancy said in an email.
The wreckage of a black sedan flipped onto its side could be seen across from Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau — which neighbours Murdoch MacKay on Redonda Street — at around 10 a.m., with car parts and other debris, including a broken lamp post, strewn around the area.
“It’s horrible,” said Henry DeBeer, who passed by the scene Sunday morning. He said the accident was “unnerving” for someone who lives nearby and walks by the residential street often.
“Just looking at it, you had to be driving pretty fast. And you see quite a bit of that in this area off and on,” DeBeer said.
“If this happens at 3:00 in the afternoon, there’s a lot of people in this area, and somebody else could have got hit.”

STARS Ambulance responded to the scene just after 2 a.m. Spokesperson Blake Robert said a man whom police say was the only person in the vehicle was flown to the Health Sciences Centre after the crash.
“We kind of heard all the sirens like the fire engine, ambulance, the police car,” local resident Pam Heaphy said.
“When I got out of the house, I saw the STARS helicopter coming down,” Heaphy said. “I’ve never seen it land in the city. So [I was] very surprised.”
Robert said missions within Winnipeg are not frequent, but do happen occasionally. STARS responded to six scene calls within city limits last fiscal year, the spokesperson said.
A section of Redonda Street between Kildare Avenue E. and Victoria Avenue E. was temporarily closed Sunday while investigators processed the scene of the crash.
Chancy said the road was reopened to traffic as of 1 p.m.
