Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio and defender Richie Laryea have been selected by Jesse Marsch for the Canadian national team to compete at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
Both are going to their second World Cup, two of 13 players with that distinction in the Canadian 26-man squad. They join Haiti’s Derrick Etienne Jr as TFC players going to the tournament this summer.
Laryea has often been Canada’s first-choice cover for Alphonso Davies at left back over the past year. Davies has not played for the national team since March 2025 with a series, and his latest hamstring strain means he won’t be ready in time to play in Canada’s first match of the tournament.
Laryea himself has been battling a thigh injury suffered in April, and couldn’t play for TFC before the MLS World Cup break as first hoped. His availability for the first Canada game is to be determined, but if he can start at BMO Field, he probably will.

Osorio isn’t expected to play as many minutes for Marsch’s side, but is a key part of the national team’s leadership group. Osorio is second all-time on the men’s national team’s list of most capped players with 89, tied with former TFC midfielder Julian De Guzman. Atiba Hutchinson is first with 104.
His veteran presence is crucial for a group with 13 World Cup debutants, and he can still contribute on the pitch as well in central midfield. For Canada these days, he might not start any World Cup matches, but he could be exactly the player Marsch needs to come in and see out a game.
Osorio is the oldest player on the national team at 33 years old, while Laryea (31) is one of just three other players 30 or above, with goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau (32) and defender Joel Waterman (30).

Former Toronto FC winger Jacob Shaffelburg is going to his first World Cup, but other former Reds players Ralph Priso and Jayden Nelson miss out after being in the team’s training camp this week. That is also the case with former TFC Academy striker Jacen Russell-Rowe, who now plays in France with Toulouse.
Priso and Nelson, as well as Sporting KC left back Zorhan Bassong, will travel with Canada for warmup friendlies next week in Edmonton and Montreal, still tasked with the important job of helping the selected players manage their minutes and taking part in training.
Canada will play Uzbekistan in Edmonton on Monday, and Republic of Ireland in Montreal on Friday.
Their first World Cup game is June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, before playing Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver on June 18 and June 24.
