The United States is changing its tone and approach in discussions about Russia’s war against Ukraine. This was stated by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a briefing at the G7 summit, which was broadcast by the AP.
Why this matters
The G7 summit and the invitation extended to President Zelenskyy are significant against the backdrop of a pause in negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, which had previously been mediated by Washington.
With the U.S. returning to the negotiations, discussions have resumed in Ukraine and the West regarding possible timelines for ending the war. Read more about likely scenarios for a ceasefire in this article LIGA.net .
Karni said that he had already had several conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump during the summit, and would have even more today. They discussed a wide range of topics—from the economy, bilateral relations, and his birthday to artificial intelligence, Ukraine, and Iran.
“The discussions reveal a shift in the mindset of the United States and President Trump. It seems to be a tougher and more realistic view—in my opinion—of the situation on the ground and of the war,” Carney said.
He also described Trump’s position on increasing sanctions pressure on Russia and providing additional aid to Ukraine as “more realistic”.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also said on the sidelines of the summit that he saw “a chance to achieve peace” in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Ahead of the G7 summit, according to Politico, European officials and diplomats feared that Trump would regain control over the peace talks, sideline them, and derail their strategy of maximum pressure on Russia.
At the same time, during the summit on June 16, Trump emphasized that Russia “must reach an agreement” to end the war against Ukraine.
On June 17, Politico, citing European diplomats, reported that Trump is considering providing more active support to Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia. After meeting with Trump, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the American leader supported the idea of granting Ukraine licenses to produce missiles for the Patriot system and promised to help increase the number of interceptors for air defense.
