That report soon prompted discussion around Toronto\u2019s potential involvement.<\/p>\n

Writer Rachel Kryshak<\/a> responded, \u201cWonder if Toronto calls on this. Knies is cost controlled, while Nikishin is not. Nikishin is also exactly the type of defender than Toronto needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The timing makes sense. Toronto\u2019s defense was a major weakness during its disastrous 2025-26 season. The Maple Leafs finished last in the Atlantic Division and ranked 31st in goals against after allowing 299 goals.<\/p>\n

New general manager John Chayka has already begun a significant overhaul of the blue line. Trades for Emil Andrae and Darren Raddysh signaled a clear effort to improve mobility and puck movement.<\/p>\n

Nikishin\u2019s value has never been higher.<\/p>\n

The rookie defenseman recorded 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games while helping Carolina capture the Stanley Cup. His 11 goals established a franchise record for a rookie defenseman, and he earned a place on the NHL All-Rookie Team.<\/p>\n

At 24, Nikishin fits Toronto\u2019s timeline better than many veteran options. He brings size (stands 6\u2032 4\u2033), physicality, and strong transition play, all areas where the Leafs struggled last season.<\/p>\n

The challenge is the acquisition cost.<\/p>\n

One name that naturally enters the conversation is Matthew Knies<\/a>. The 23-year-old winger is signed on a 6-year, $46.5 million contract, and remains one of Toronto\u2019s most valuable young assets. Knies scored 23 goals and 43 points in 79 games last season despite the team\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n

So, trading Knies for Nikishin would create a difficult debate. Toronto desperately needs top-pair defense talent, but power forwards with Knies\u2019 age and production are equally difficult to replace.<\/p>\n

Still, Chayka has made it clear that no option is off the table. With nearly $19 million in cap space and a mandate to reshape the roster, Toronto is expected to explore every opportunity to upgrade its defense.<\/p>\n
