The Montreal Canadiens are acquiring forward Brett Berard<\/a> from the New York Rangers in exchange for prospect defenseman William Trudeau<\/a>. The trade was first reported by Peter Baugh of The Athletic<\/a>, while Mollie Walker of the New York Post<\/a> first reported Trudeau\u2019s inclusion.<\/p>\n

That the Rangers have decided to trade Berard is no surprise. Walker reported earlier this week<\/a> that Berard was \u201clooking for a change of scenery\u201d after a difficult 2025-26 campaign. Three days removed from that report, Berard has been dealt.<\/p>\n

Before diving into the players involved, it is important to contextualize this trade within the broader recent history of the two involved front offices. Berard was drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 draft, back when Jeff Gorton was GM of the Rangers, and when Nick Bobrov played a major role in the Rangers\u2019 draft efforts. Gorton is now president of hockey operations in Montreal, and Bobrov remains one of his key lieutenants in Montreal\u2019s hockey operations department.<\/p>\n

Over the past few years, there have been numerous media reports indicating some level of mutual friction or tension between the Canadiens\u2019 front office and their counterparts in New York. Arthur Staple wrote in 2024 for The Athletic<\/a> that \u201cthere is no love lost\u201d between Gorton and Rangers GM Chris Drury. Drury was an assistant GM under Gorton in New York, and replaced him as GM.<\/p>\n

It was believed in the past that the friction between the two front offices would stand in the way of any potential trades, but it appears those reports are no longer accurate. Or, that relations between the two lead executives have thawed to a certain extent<\/p>\n

In any case, the deal is a fair swap of two prospects whose odds of reaching the NHL could be improved by this change of scenery. Berard, who turns 24 in September, is entering his fourth full season of professional hockey. He has had a solid run playing for the Rangers\u2019 AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, including a 25-goal, 48-point rookie campaign in 2023-24. He potted nine goals and 23 points the following season, and found his way into 35 NHL games with New York, where he scored 10 points.<\/p>\n

But Berard struggled in 2025-26, posting just 22 points in 41 games, and no points in 13 NHL games. As the Rangers pivoted to focus more on youth later in the season, the team shifted its focus to younger prospects such as Adam Sykora<\/a> and Jaroslav Chmelar<\/a>. It looked as though those players had passed Berard on the Rangers\u2019 depth chart, meaning his best chance to return to the NHL would likely lie elsewhere.<\/p>\n

He\u2019ll get a chance to compete for a roster spot in Montreal, where he could be a cheap option for the team\u2019s bottom six. Montreal is expected to trade away veteran forward Brendan Gallagher<\/a>, a bottom-six staple, this summer. Berard could be a candidate to replace him in Martin St. Louis\u2019 lineup.<\/p>\n

Trudeau, who will also turn 24 in the fall, does not have the same level of NHL experience as Berard but is a solid prospect in his own right. He\u2019s held down a steady top-four role for the AHL\u2019s Laval Rocket over the last four years, but the sheer volume of young defensemen the Canadiens have in their system has kept him from earning an NHL call-up. The 6\u20191\u2033, 205-pound left-shot blueliner could have a better chance of getting into NHL games in New York.<\/p>\n
