{"id":107145,"date":"2026-06-28T08:37:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/107145\/"},"modified":"2026-06-28T08:37:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:37:10","slug":"canadas-2-1-billion-food-strategy-doesnt-mention-plant-based-proteins-once","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/107145\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s $2.1 Billion Food Strategy Doesn&#8217;t Mention Plant-Based Proteins Once"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada has announced a new USD $2.1 billion (CAD $3 billion) food strategy, but it doesn\u2019t mention plant-based or alternative proteins once.<\/p>\n<p>According to an official statement by Mark Carney, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2026\/06\/11\/prime-minister-carney-launches-national-food-security-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Prime Minister of Canada<\/a>, the strategy focuses on \u201clowering costs, creating jobs, and building a food system that is more resilient, more competitive, and more our own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/news\/celebrities\/kevin-bacon-swap-meat-for-beans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Bacon Wants You To Swap Meat For Beans One Day Per Week<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 10-year <a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.canada.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2026-06\/national_food_security_strategy_06-26-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Food Security Strategy<\/a> is the first of its kind, and aims to boost domestic food production, \u201ccut red tape,\u201d and spur grocery store competition.<\/p>\n<p>While the food strategy aims to expand Canada\u2019s production of fruits and vegetables, it also plans for expanded animal farming and seafood production, two of the most unstable, inefficient, and high-impact forms of protein production in the world.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WorldAnimalProtectionCanada\/posts\/canada-is-already-a-global-leader-in-producing-plant-based-proteins-like-lentils\/1404777838351651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">noted<\/a> by World Animal Protection Canada, the country is \u201calready a global leader in producing plant-based proteins like lentils, beans and peas,\u201d but without a plant-based strategy, Canada is \u201cmissing the chance\u201d to achieve its full potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The global food system is <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/news\/economics\/investors-companies-divest-from-animal-products\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly unstable<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/lifestyle\/food\/eu-action-plan-plant-based-foods\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">countless experts<\/a> have specifically endorsed plant-based and alternative proteins as an effective way of making the food system more equitable, ethical, sustainable, and profitable.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/news\/environment\/updated-eat-lancet-planetary-health-diet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">updated EAT-Lancet report<\/a> found that its Planetary Health Diet could prevent more than 40,000 early deaths per day, and 15 million deaths per year.<\/p>\n<p>The plant-forward diet could also save $5 trillion per year \u2013 more than 10 times the amount needed to drive widespread food system change \u2013 through improved climate resilience, environmental restoration, and improved human health.<\/p>\n<p>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/news\/alternative-protein\/one-bean-per-day-europeans-million\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Legume Renaissance: One Bean Per Day Could Save Europeans \u20ac42 Million<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plant-based growth, Europe, and the food system<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/canada-food-system-strategy-alternative-proteins-plant-based-3-1200x800.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo shows three cows in a factory farm. Following its groundbreaking plant-based roadmap in 2023, Denmark announced <a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/culture\/politics\/denmark-plant-based-initiative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new initiative<\/a> last year that aims to replicate the same model EU-wide.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/video\/5a84f274-4927-47a2-bac2-a25b72c5dc09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> Financial Times<\/a>, Denmark\u2019s growing plant-based food market could be worth up to $2 billion and create 27,000 jobs by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>PBN runs a sponsored content model.
