A rainfall warning remained in effect through Monday, with an additional 70 to 80 mm forecast for parts of Alberta. The system stalled over the province because of a Rex block — a high-pressure weather pattern that can stall storm systems over one area, prolonging rainfall and increasing flood risk.

“Claim volumes have increased in several areas across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, with activity continuing to build following successive weather events,” Slade said. “The focus continues to be adjusters coordinating with restoration contractors to ensure mitigation of water damage is completed as soon as possible and communicating with insureds.”

Coverage gaps back in focus

As overland flood claims increase, brokers are once again confronting one of the market’s longstanding coverage challenges.

As in most Canadian markets, standard home insurance policies in Alberta generally do not include overland flood protection by default. Coverage typically must be purchased as an endorsement and may not be available for every property, particularly those considered at higher flood risk.

Also in the news: Alberta’s cap came back, the very next day. (Thought it was a goner?)

Lack of consumer awareness about the optional flood endorsement surfaced even before the record-breaking weekend. In a story published Thursday on Canadian Underwriter, brokers were urged to have proactive conversations with clients about their protection before the next storm hits, said Laura Twidle, president and CEO of Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ).

“Brokers should be asking clients whether they have sewer backup coverage and whether they have flood coverage,” she said.

Saskatchewan also seeing elevated activity

Alberta isn’t the only Prairie province under pressure. Saskatchewan also saw elevated claims activity following a series of severe weather events, including the June 9 Regina hailstorm.

More than 10,000 auto claims and 800 property claims were filed with Saskatchewan Government Insurance following the storm, with preliminary damage estimates approaching $80 million. Tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings also remained in effect across wide areas of Saskatchewan over the weekend, covering communities near Estevan, Weyburn, Regina and Moose Jaw.

Edmonton’s rainfall record adds another data point to what has already been an unusually active start to Canada’s catastrophe season.

From a cherished family Mustang to a barn full of vintage gems, this broker turns classic cars into lasting connections.

As ICLR and CatIQ noted in Canadian Underwriter last week, five catastrophe events have been declared in five weeks across Canada — a pace Twidle said more closely resembles 2023 than 2024, but one that is notable for arriving so early in the season.

“Cat season shifted up a month — and we haven’t even entered it yet,” she said.

With additional rainfall still in the forecast and claims continuing to build across the Prairies, Crawford expects elevated activity to continue as adjusters and restoration contractors work to mitigate damage and help insureds recover as quickly as possible.

            Subscribe to our newsletters

Sonia Sache

Sonia is an award-winning multimedia journalist, producer TV personality and content strategist with more than a decade of experience across television, radio, digital media, and communications.

Insurance claims are climbing across Western Canada as record rainfall and successive storms push adjusters into the field…

[10
164,38423,4154,38424,52,4042,240,38425,34684,2393,38426,37146
post-109271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-edmonton","tag-alberta","tag-catiq","tag-claims","tag-crawford-company","tag-edmonton","tag-flood","tag-manitoba","tag-overland-flooding","tag-property-insurance","tag-saskatchewan","tag-sewer-backup","tag-water-damage
["GET
