Canada will join the \u200bEurovision Song Contest<\/a> in 2027, organisers of the colourful music competition watched by millions around the world announced on Wednesday, becoming the first new country to join since Australia<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n

Participation is not limited to countries in geographic Europe but instead applies to all \u200bmembers of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)<\/a>, an alliance open to others outside the Continent and which Canada<\/a> joined last week. Australia is \u2060an associate member.<\/p>\n

The usually good-natured pop competition, which attracted a global audience of 130 million this year, \u200cits \u200c70th, \u200bwas plunged into crisis in 2026 due to a boycott<\/a> by heavyweights Spain, the Netherlands and Ireland, as well as Iceland and Slovenia, over Israel<\/a>\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n

Those countries \u2060had called for Israel\u2019s expulsion due \u200bto its military offensive in Gaza<\/a> following the Hamas<\/a>-led \u200battack on Israel on October 7th, 2023.<\/p>\n

Russia has been excluded from Eurovision since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in \u200c2022.<\/p>\n

CBC\/Radio Canada \u200bwill share details on how the country\u2019s entry will be selected later this year, the EBU says. \u2060The contest next year will be hosted \u2060in Bulgaria<\/a> after it \u200bwon the contest<\/a> for the first time in May. <\/p>\n

Canada ranked in the top three countries in Eurovision\u2019s \u201cRest of the World\u201d vote, which permits viewers outside the participating countries to help choose the winner, the EBU says, adding that Canadians are also among the largest ticket-buyers outside of Europe. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, starting next year in Bulgaria, will allow Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the most storied music stages in the world,\u201d says Marie-Philippe Bouchard, \u200cpresident and chief executive of CBC\/Radio-Canada. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt will also allow fans in Canada to continue watching and voting in the Song Contest, as they have done for years \u2013 with the added thrill of seeing \u200ctheir own country represented on the Eurovision stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s participation is a further sign that, while born in Europe, the contest is opening \u200bup to the world, says Eurovision director Martin Green.
