The deal contains no salary retention. The Oilers will receive defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp in the return.

This move will end one of the league’s premier trade sagas while also loading up the emerging San Jose Sharks. Nurse has stood out as an offensive defenseman throughout his career, though his style took a turn during a struggling 2025-26 season. Typically good for at least 30 points a season, Nurse managed just 24 this season while also recording a career-high 104 penalty minutes. His dip in scoring coincided with a changing of the guard on Edmonton’s second power-play unit, with Mattias Ekholm steppin over Nurse for the quarterback role behind Evan Bouchard on the top unit.

While Nurse’s last three seasons have been marked by challenges, his ability to drive the puck up ice and play physical on defense continue to shine. He has averaged 151 shot blocks and 174 hits per 82 games played through 798 games, and 12 seasons, in the NHL. Both of those marks would have led the Sharks this season, speaking to the impact that Nurse may be able to find. He should also step up as one of the team’s top power-play options, competing with rookies Sam Dickinson and Eric Pohlkamp for a spot on the top unit.

Nurse could also benefit from the shutdown support of Jacob Trouba, who signed a long-term deal with the Sharks out of free agency. The duo will represent a potential veteran-heavy top-pair for San Jose to place behind stars Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. Nurse and Trouba would offer plenty of physical protection for the nimble scorers, while their pairing would leave Dmitry Orlov available to support Dickinson on the second-pair. Multiple layers of physical defenders could also make it easier for second-overall pick Ivar Stenberg to become comfortable at the top flight.

Meanwhile, Edmonton will seek a big year out of the 24-year-old Mukhamadullin. The 2020 first-round pick began to get his feet wet in the NHL over the last two seasons, before an undisclosed injury derailed the second-half of his 2025-26 campaign. He finished this season with just 12 points in 50 games played. Mukhamadullin now have 83 career appeareances in the NHL, with 22 points, a minus-10, and 125 shot blocks to show for it. He is still seeking out a full-year at the top level. Edmonton will offer Mukhamadullin the chance to compete for a nightly role alongside Jake Walman and recent signing Ryan Shea. The Oilers will also move on from this trade with a projected $9.25MM in cap space, per PuckPedia, after not retaining any salary on Nurse’s deal. That money could prove invaluable with much of the off-season yet to unfold.

The San Jose Sharks have acquired defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
