{"id":11348,"date":"2026-04-20T10:18:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T10:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/11348\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T10:18:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T10:18:11","slug":"gas-diesel-prices-drop-in-n-s-after-federal-tax-temporarily-taken-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/11348\/","title":{"rendered":"Gas, diesel prices drop in N.S. after federal tax temporarily taken off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can thank the federal government this morning as you fill up your tank.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, the federal excise tax on fuel has been removed, dropping prices sharply in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p>At midnight, the provincial regular adjusted the minimum price per litre for regular self serve gasoline to 167.2 cents, a drop of 11.5 cents.<\/p>\n<p>Diesel prices are also down by 5.7 cents to sit at 206.6 cents per litre.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney <a href=\"https:\/\/halifax.citynews.ca\/2026\/04\/14\/excise-fuel-tax-gasoline-and-diesel-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">announced last week that he would remove the tax until Labour Day<\/a> as a way to offer relief to Canadians as the war in Iran continues to send oil prices surging and driving up costs worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, oil prices climbed more than 5 per cent as a standoff between Iran and the U.S. prevented tankers from using the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>The Persian Gulf waterway was closed again after Iran reversed a decision to reopen the strait and President Donald Trump said a U.S. Navy blockade of Iranian ports would remain in effect.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, oil prices had dropped back to where they were in the early days of the war, putting the markets into positive territory heading into the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>A freer flow of oil could take pressure off prices for gasoline and many other products.<\/p>\n<p>With files from The Canadian Press<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"You can thank the federal government this morning as you fill up your tank.
