Born to Kill world tour<\/p>\nSocial Distortion are considered one of the best-selling punk rock bands, with more than three million albums sold worldwide. They are pioneers of the original Southern California punk rock movement out of Orange County, California and broke through in the mid-eighies with the help of legendary Los Angeles disc jockey Rodney Bingenheimer. Over the decades, the punk godfathers in the band have all but trademarked their sound, a brand of hard rockabilly\/punk that\u2019s cut with the melodic, road-tested lyrics of frontman Mike Ness. Their searing guitars and a locomotive rhythm section sound as alive today as they did in \u201982, as do Ness\u2019 hard-luck tales of love, loss and lessons learned. \u201cThe most common thing I hear is, \u2018Man, your music got me through some hard times,\u2019\u201d Ness says. \u201cAnd I just say, \u2018Me too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Now in their fourth decade, Mike Ness and Social Distortion have officially done one of the most non-punk things possible: They\u2019ve failed to burn out. Mixing Springsteen\u2019s factory-overalls ethic with Southern California punk energy and black leather, Social Distortion formed with Ness and high school buddy, the late Dennis Danell, in the late 1970s; the group broke in 1983 with the thrashing plate of punk and displeasure \u201cMommy\u2019s Little Monster.\u201d Their 1988 follow-up, \u201cPrison Bound,\u201d hinted at a sonic change to come that solidified into the instantly recognizable brand of rock n\u2019 roll that\u2019s defined them since.<\/p>\n

\u201cBorn To Kill\u201d was released this May. The album is more than the conclusion to a 15-year wait between Social Distortion albums, it\u2019s a revelation: 11 songs of pure, unadulterated rock \u2019n\u2019 roll fury, joy and catharsis, all imbued with the signature blend of defiance and world-weariness that has made founder Mike Ness a poet and sage to the dispossessed for more than 40 years.<\/p>\n
The first Social Distortion album since Ness\u2019 recovery from a bout with cancer, \u201cBorn To Kill\u201d brims with aggressive optimism. The album wastes no time letting the listener know where its heart is, with its title track and mission statement dropping nods to Lou Reed (\u201cRock \u2019n\u2019 Roll Animal gonna come your way!\u201d) and Iggy and the Stooges (\u201cThe agenda is yeah to Search and Destroy\u201d) and an homage to David Bowie (\u201cIt\u2019s a Rock \u2019n\u2019 Roll Suicide\u201d) following a few songs later on \u201cPartners In Crime.\u201d This is a man, a band and a record that wear their influences proudly while creating timeless anthems and ballads that both chart Social Distortion\u2019s path forward and celebrate its storied past. \u201cTonight\u201d and \u201cThe Way Things Were\u201d are emotionally charged reminiscences in the vein of classics like \u201cStory of My Life\u201d from the band\u2019s eponymous 1990 breakthrough, and \u201cI Was Wrong\u201d from 1996\u2019s \u201cWhite Light, White Heat, White Trash,\u201d the latter containing a potent distillation of the Social D ethos: \u201cI wrote a song with a stolen riff \/ If you ain\u2019t got a song you ain\u2019t got shit.\u201d<\/p>\n
