{"id":119101,"date":"2026-07-07T01:14:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T01:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/119101\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T01:14:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T01:14:12","slug":"canada-selects-germanys-thyssenkrupp-to-build-12-submarines-as-it-boosts-nato-spending-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/119101\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada selects Germany&#8217;s ThyssenKrupp to build 12 submarines as it boosts NATO spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canada on Monday named Germany\u2019s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as the preferred supplier for up to 12 submarines in what <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-trump-us-free-trade-economic-club-new-york-ac5c8d9fa2d1171e9e408a4c6224d285\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> called the country\u2019s largest-ever military procurement.<\/p>\n<p>The decision came before Carney headed to this week\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-summit-spending-rutte-afeb65422318e1dd91c5a433f9d35980\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NATO summit<\/a>, where allies face pressure to back higher defense spending with concrete plans.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said the procurement will be \u201cthe largest in Canadian history\u201d and that the TKMS platform is optimal for Arctic waters and for NATO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe submarine is proven and capable,\u201d Carney said, noting TKMS supply submarines to more than one-third of NATO members.<\/p>\n<p>Carney named TKMS the preferred supplier and said negotiations would begin on a final contract. He declined to disclose the price, saying only it would involve \u201ctens of billions of dollars\u201d in investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a strong signal for our transatlantic and European partnership,\u201d Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz said before thanking Carney. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-submarines-germany-south-korea-e844e2892be6287f5703d687ec759490\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The German company<\/a> beat out <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-south-korea-submarine-bid-77395ee0340731f4f58609f47a93c4c8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Korea\u2019s Hanwha Ocean<\/a>. ThyssenKrupp said its submarines would strengthen interoperability because many NATO allies already operate its conventionally powered vessels.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has pledged to sharply increase military spending after years of lagging behind NATO targets.
