{"id":121977,"date":"2026-07-08T21:49:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T21:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/121977\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T21:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T21:49:09","slug":"n-b-cancer-researcher-appointed-to-senate-by-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/121977\/","title":{"rendered":"N.B. cancer researcher appointed to Senate by prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">New Brunswick&#8217;s Dr. Rodney Ouellette is set to become one of the newest members of Canada&#8217;s Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The announcement was made on Tuesday that Ouellette, who&#8217;s from Cap-Pel\u00e9 and lives in Dieppe, was being appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ouellette is a physician and a scientist who worked on advancing cancer research, precision oncology and molecular medicine throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He found out recently that he may be appointed after submitting an application about a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Obviously surprised &#8230; you kind of get a call at one point where the prime minister&#8217;s office asks if you&#8217;re still interested in serving&#8230; So it&#8217;s all very recent in the last few weeks,&#8221; said Ouellette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He is the <a data-ylk=\"slk:founder of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/canceratlantique.ca\/en\/our-team\/research-team\/57-dr-rodney-ouellette\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">founder of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute<\/a> and currently serves as R.R. L\u00e9ger Chair in Precision Cancer Research<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ouellette is also the head of molecular diagnostics at the Dr. Georges\u2011L.\u2011Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He has also been appointed to the Order of New Brunswick in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ouellette thinks his past experience will be helpful for him as a Senator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a wealth of lived experience and knowledge in this field that can be useful to guide the decisions, the drafting of new legislation, amending of legislation and the Senate committees,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ouellette said in the health and research world you&#8217;re impacted by government decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said he initially applied to be a senator because he was concerned with New Brunswick&#8217;s ability to receive research and innovation funding compared to bigger provinces.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Dr. Rodney Ouellette, left, is presented with the King Charles III Coronation Medal last fall by Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc to recognize Ouellette's advocacy for Cancer research. (DLeBlancNB\/X)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said his job in the Senate is to represent New Brunswickers and try to understand how they might be impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But, Ouellette admits he is new to politics and that it may be a &#8220;steep learning curve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said other senators have reached out to him with congratulations and offers for any help he needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As a senator, Ouellette also wants to help address drug pricing and the companies who sell them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;That&#8217;s going to affect health care and that&#8217;s the most important topic to Canadians,&#8221; said Ouellette. &#8220;That&#8217;s something we&#8217;re going to hear a lot of in the coming years and if I can help navigate those waters, I certainly will try.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Dr. Rodney Ouellette, the director of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute, operated a DNA sequencing machine in Moncton.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/cbc.ca\/bea3ffe43985e9878018dcd44bb4744a.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ouellette has multiple research duties in Atlantic Canada. He hopes to bring his health-care experience to the Senate. (CBC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Following an announcement that Carney is changing the Senate appointment process, he named Ouellette along with three other new senators.
