{"id":124266,"date":"2026-07-10T10:48:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T10:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/124266\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T10:48:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T10:48:07","slug":"alberta-wants-to-be-a-model-for-government-ai-and-power-canada-wide-adoption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/124266\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta wants to be a model for government AI and power Canada-wide adoption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alberta wants to be a model for how the public sector and other large organizations employ AI, and host the compute capacity that powers it, Technology Minister Nate Glubish says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 18 months, provincial staff have used in-house tools built on top of commercially available AI models to scan all the code in its software systems for security vulnerabilities, check which applications need upgrading and develop some of the replacements.<\/p>\n<p>Talking Points<\/p>\n<p>The Alberta government has built its own in-house AI tools on top of Anthropic\u2019s models, which it\u2019s using to review its technology systems and build new applications for departments and agencies. The province has open sourced the whole stack so that other public services and firms can do the same.<br \/>\nTechnology Minister Nate Glubish says the province also wants to be the source of the compute that will power AI adoption across Canada<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have built an entire army of AI agents,\u201d Glubish told The Logic. His team also developed the layers of code that sit between those automated assistants and the models that power them, letting them access necessary information and make changes to other software systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glubish\u2019s ministry manages all of the Alberta government\u2019s technology systems outside of health care. The result of its scanning project, he says, is the first comprehensive overview of the state of the public service\u2019s technology systems, some of which are decades old and had never been properly documented.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The province estimates fixing them up would normally cost about $2 billion and take a century. Using its tools, it says, it can complete the work for five per cent of the cost in just four years.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the tech team built the infrastructure department a new system to manage provincial properties like hospitals and schools over 10 months, at a cost of $2.5 million. \u201cThey were doing it on Excel, and it was not scalable,\u201d Glubish said. His ministry decided to take it on after the department got a $52-million, three-year quote from an IT consulting firm. It also open sourced the code for its tools. \u201cThis is the evidence that we have to say it\u2019s not just aspirational\u2014we are doing it,\u201d Glubish said. He suggested the published materials can inspire other governments as well as companies to copy and remix the tools Alberta has built for its own needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alberta\u2019s new AI applications run on Anthropic\u2019s commercially available Claude Opus and Sonnet models. In a blog post, the San Francisco-based firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/alberta-government-claude-cybersecurity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the province\u2019s work is an example of how government departments can use its technology \u201cto secure their systems at a large scale.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alberta is also promising procurements. In January, the province requested information from companies on the compute and tools they have to sell, specifically looking for \u201cdomestically controlled software, AI models and platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canadian companies, researchers, citizens and governments at all levels are currently \u201cvery dependent\u201d on AI infrastructure that\u2019s located or controlled from the U.S., Glubish said. That leaves their data and IP subject to U.S. law.<\/p>\n<p>Canada needs its own technology stack of hardware and software located and controlled within its borders, he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why we want to become the compute capital of Canada.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alberta has touted its natural gas as the right fuel to power AI infrastructure. Glubish initially <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/news\/alberta-natural-gas-power-silicon-valleys-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took<\/a> that message to Silicon Valley, selling tech giants on building their data centres in the province. On Wednesday, Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/news\/meta-13-billion-alberta-data-centre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> plans for a $13-billion, one-gigawatt compute facility outside Edmonton, to be powered by a natural-gas power plant built by Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta also wants to encourage the development of AI infrastructure that\u2019s domestically owned and controlled, according to Glubish. The province will \u201cvote with our wallet,\u201d he said. \u201cFor our own compute workloads, we intend to be a customer of sovereign compute capacity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The province is still determining its specific requirements, Glubish said. Canadian AI players like AltaML Bell, Cohere and Denvr have all expressed interest in selling to it, as have U.S. tech giants like Cisco, Dell and Google.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government\u2019s new national AI strategy also <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/news\/special-report\/canada-ai-strategy-investment-adoption\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promises<\/a> to use its buying power to spur the development of homegrown data centres. Alberta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/news\/carney-smith-pipeline-bargain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deal<\/a> with Ottawa, headlined by a new <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/news\/carney-smith-pipeline-deal-trans-mountain-pembina\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pipeline<\/a> to the West Coast, cites co-operation on sovereign cloud as one of its objectives.
