The Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest pyramids in the world, rises to about 65m (213ft) and spans roughly 225m (738ft) at its base. The Pyramid of the Moon, where the gunman was seen, stands at around 43m (141ft) tall.<\/p>\n
Archaeologists believe the pyramids were used for religious and ceremonial purposes, including offerings and possibly human sacrifices dedicated to deities associated with the sun, moon, rain and fertility.<\/p>\n
The site is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
