Separately, the United States and Canada have finalized an agreement to open a new multibillion-dollar bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, resolving a dispute that had delayed the project.<\/p>\n<p>The Gordie Howe International Bridge is scheduled to open on July 27, becoming the fourth crossing between Detroit and Canada. The 1.5-mile span was originally slated to open the previous month. On June 11, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority stated that the U.S. and Canada had agreed to postpone the opening to address outstanding issues.<\/p>\n<p>Current President of the United States Donald Trump, who earlier this year threatened to block the bridge&#8217;s opening unless the U.S. held an ownership stake, announced on Truth Social early on Saturday that he had secured a much better deal for America. Trump wrote that the original agreement for the new and spectacular bridge was unacceptable to him. He added that the new deal is great and fair, thanking and congratulating the Canadian government, and expressing hope for many years of success with the development.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said the two countries agreed on a series of cooperative measures regarding how tolls would be charged to drivers. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/app.indexbox.io\/companies\/profile\/3963568\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, citing a Canadian official, both sides agreed that half of the net profit generated by the bridge will go to a regional development fund. The original deal stipulated that all toll revenue would go to Canada until it recovered the approximately 6.4 billion Canadian dollars it cost to build the bridge. Construction began in 2018, and Canada agreed to cover the entire cost. The Canadian official also told The Journal that the bridge authority will need U.S. approval before raising tolls by 10% or more, and also before cutting tolls below what is charged for comparable crossings, such as the Ambassador Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital sought comment from the White House, the Canadian Prime Minister&#8217;s Office, and the bridge authority on the terms of the new deal. In a statement on Friday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer celebrated the bridge&#8217;s opening, which will be co-owned by her state and Canada. She did not mention President Trump or the administration in her remarks. Whitmer said that thousands of Michigan workers built the critical bridge, which will speed up auto production, lower costs, ease traffic, strengthen agriculture, and provide better-paying jobs and brighter futures for people on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t1.
