A contact bat with position versatility, Cooney was likely to be the first Duck selected, but he still went a bit above his ranking. Fellow former Oregon shortstop Josh Kasevich<\/a> is also currently in the Blue Jays’ system.<\/p>\n Cooney saw his role with the Ducks<\/a> evolve during his three seasons in Eugene. After moving around the infield, he found a home at second base, where he thrived in his junior season. The second baseman for the Ducks slashed 331\/.420\/.524 and led the team in hits (82), doubles (22) and extra-base hits (31) while swiping 13 bases. Cooney also earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and a spot on the Eugene Regional all-tournament team.<\/a><\/p>\n The Ducks used Cooney as a table-setter for the power in the lineup behind him. All signs point to Cooney signing with the Blue Jays and leaving Oregon after one of the best single-season performances in program history atop the lineup, finishing second in doubles and fourth in hits in a single season.<\/p>\n Cooney is the first Duck to be selected, but likely won\u2019t be the last.
