{"id":127563,"date":"2026-07-13T10:50:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T10:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/127563\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T10:50:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T10:50:28","slug":"bank-of-canada-set-to-hold-rates-as-a-rebound-in-growth-offsets-inflation-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/127563\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank of Canada set to hold rates as a rebound in growth offsets inflation worries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">By Promit Mukherjee  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">OTTAWA, July 13 (Reuters) &#8211; The Bank of Canada is expected to keep its key policy rate unchanged at 2.25% on Wednesday, as signs of an easing underlying price pressures \u200cgive policymakers little reason to raise borrowing costs while a rebound in economic growth after a \u200ctechnical recession reduces the need for any stimulus.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">All 36 economists surveyed by Reuters expect the central bank to hold rates, with a majority \u200bforecasting no change until at least July next year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The decision will be accompanied by the BoC&#8217;s quarterly Monetary Policy Report, updating forecasts for growth and inflation following an oil-price shock and continued United States trade uncertainty.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;It is really just about inflation that the bank focuses on, and if inflation pressures are still high, I don&#8217;t know that \u200cthe bank would necessarily move,&#8221; said Pedro \u2060Antunes, chief economist at Signal49 Research.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">While the economy remains weak, he said, it is not weak enough to require additional BoC stimulus.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The economy contracted in the final quarter of last \u2060year and again in the first three months of 2026, but rebounded more strongly than expected in April. The unemployment rate edged down to 6.5% in June, data showed last week.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The bank&#8217;s last move was a reduction in October, which \u200bbrought the \u200bpolicy rate to the bottom of its estimated neutral \u200brange of 2.25% to 3.25%.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">A hold on Wednesday \u200cwould mark six straight meetings with rates unchanged.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Inflation remains the main constraint on any easing. Annual inflation rose to 3.2% in May, breaching the central bank&#8217;s 1%-3% control range for the first time since December 2023, after higher energy prices pushed up household costs.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">But measures of core inflation have remained close to 2% and gasoline costs have come down since the start of the US-Iran war. BoC officials have said there has so far \u200cbeen limited evidence that the energy shock is spreading broadly \u200bthrough consumer prices.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;The spike in oil prices has yet to show \u200bsignificant signs of turning into a broader longer-lasting \u200binflation shock,&#8221; said Nathan Janzen and Claire Fan, economists with RBC, in a note.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Governor \u200cTiff Macklem said after the June decision that \u200bthe Bank would look through \u200bthe war-related near-term increase in inflation but would act if higher energy prices produced persistent, generalized price pressures. He also said significant new U.S. trade restrictions could require further rate cuts.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">April&#8217;s Monetary Policy \u200bReport projected 1.2% growth and 2.3% inflation \u200cthis year.
