{"id":12883,"date":"2026-04-21T09:55:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T09:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/12883\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T09:55:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T09:55:06","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/12883\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were muted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-war-pakistan-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-war-pakistan-talks\/\">as doubts grew<\/a> about peace talks taking place between Iran and the United States in Pakistan ahead of the end of a two-week ceasefire, although losses were contained by renewed enthusiasm on AI underpinning demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in positive territory ahead of U.S. retail sales figures for March. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures followed sentiment higher after Canada\u2019s main stock market closed up yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from GE Aerospace, UnitedHealth Group Inc., RTX Corp., Chubb Ltd., Capital One Financial Corp. and 3M Co. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cTechnology stocks \u2013 particularly AI-related names \u2013 are back in focus as recent earnings helped ease concerns about heavy AI spending and uncertain return timelines,\u201c Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote, wrote in a note. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cZooming out, the geopolitical and macro backdrop remains fragile, and investors are turning to data to gauge the economic impact of the Iran conflict.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.21 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 climbed 0.17 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX advanced 0.64 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gained 0.17 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.89 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng rose 0.48 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices fell on expectations peace talks between the U.S. and Iran will take place this week and allow more supply to flow from the key Middle East producing region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures declined 0.5 per cent to US$95.01 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for June delivery was down 0.58 per cent to US$86.91.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe market [is] inclined to believe that, before the expiration of the ceasefire tomorrow, at least an extension will be reached between the U.S. and Iran, and that the Israeli\u2013Palestinian talks scheduled for Thursday will not disappoint either,\u201d said analyst Tamas Varga at PVM Oil Associates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was down 0.7 per cent to US$4,784.77 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for June delivery fell 0.5 per cent to US$4,803.60.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 73.18 US cents to 73.33 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 0.76 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, gained 0.19 per cent to 98.28. The U.S. dollar traded at $1.3661. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro fell 0.25 per cent to US$1.1761. The British pound dropped 0.25 per cent to US$1.3502. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.257 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:15 a.m. ET: U.S. ADP employment (four-week average change) for April 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. retail sales for March. Consensus is gain of 1.3 per cent (or 0.2 per cent excluding gas and automobiles) from February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">10 a.m. ET: U.S. business inventories for February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">10 a.m. ET: U.S. pending home sales for March.
