One person has died after a fire broke out at a three-storey building on Edmonton’s north side Monday night.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that “a car left the road, struck the building and hit a gas line on the outside of the building,” a city spokesperson told CBC News on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
On Monday night, another spokesperson from the city said fire crews were called to a fire at a building in the area of 132nd Avenue and 82nd Street at 9:19 p.m. When firefighters arrived four minutes later, a second alarm was called shortly thereafter and more resources were deployed to the scene.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson told CBC News on Monday that the first floor of the building houses businesses and the upper two floors are apartments. The spokesperson said the entire building had been evacuated.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson said it was too early to determine what may have caused the fire.<\/p>\n
As of 10 p.m., 11 crews were at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n
An Acute Care Alberta spokesperson told CBC News Tuesday morning that five people were taken from the scene to a hospital in stable condition.<\/p>\n
The Edmonton Police Service issued a news release saying it had closed 82nd Street in all directions between 137th Avenue and Yellowhead Trail so emergency crews could respond to “a collision and fire.” Police did not provide details about the crash.<\/p>\n
