We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Cities across Canada, the U.S. Midwest and East Coast are currently under thick blankets of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/canada-wildfire-smoke-in-us-where-b3015374.html\">wildfire smoke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Toronto, skies have been an apocalyptic orange since Wednesday morning and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/legionnaires-disease-new-york-metropolitan-museum-of-art-b3015446.html\">New York City<\/a>, Detroit and Minneapolis were also facing severe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/air-quality-office-building-systems-b2999349.html\">air quality<\/a> warnings. <\/p>\n<p>The smoke is pouring south from more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cwfis.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca\/en\/summary\">800 wildfires<\/a> in the Canadian province of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/canada-trees-rights-quebec-montreal-b3000285.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario and elsewhere, destroying <\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/ontario-wildfire-smoke-moves-east\/\">nearly 5 million acres<\/a> and forced large-scale evacuations including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wildfires-smoke-canada-minnesota-08d3fb58a434a5d42803ab1c2bbda0b3\">in neighboring Minnesota<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For millions of North Americans, smoky skies are becoming a familiar sight in warmer months. Hundreds of Canadian wildfires are sending choking smoke across provinces and into the U.S. (REUTERS)<\/p>\n<p>A new <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2026\/07\/16\/wildfires-data-damage-historical-graphs\/90861203007\/\">USA Today<\/a> analysis of wildfire data over the past three decades revealed that the number of acres burned each year is increasing. In short, wildfires are getting worse &#8211; but there\u2019s a combination of factors that\u2019s causing them to do so.<\/p>\n<p>At the root is climate change, caused by humans continuing to burn fossil fuels and increasing the global temperature overall.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change is bringing more frequent and severe extreme periods of heat and prolonged regional drought, setting up tinderbox conditions in forests that fuel larger, more erratic and stronger fires. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ontariofires_virs3_20260714.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Smoke from Canadian wildfires fires pours eastward over Canada and the U.S. in this Tuesday satellite image from NASA. Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds to thousands of miles (NASA Earth Observatory\/Lauren Dauphin)<\/p>\n<p>About half the smoke generated from wildfires between 1997-2020 could be linked to climate change, Loretta Mickley, an atmospheric chemist at Harvard University, told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2026\/07\/16\/wildfires-data-damage-historical-graphs\/90861203007\/\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we zero in more recently from 2010 to 2020, those numbers increase,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke from these fires can travel hundreds to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OregonHealthAuthority\/videos\/wildfire-smoke-safety-tips-and-resources\/1381729560546255\/\">thousands of miles<\/a> and linger over areas for days, threatening human health. <\/p>\n<p>Detroit, a city with 650,000 residents, had the worst air quality in the world Thursday, according to air quality tracking site <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=44681X1458326&amp;xcust=b3016125&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.iqair.com%2Fworld-air-quality-ranking&amp;sref=\/news\/world\/americas\/wildfires-us-canada-smoke-air-quality-b3016125.html\">iQAir<\/a>, with Toronto coming second, and Minneapolis and Chicago ranking third and fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke in Michigan degraded visibility so much that the 26,372-foot Mackinac bridge was essentially invisible, forcing drivers to slow, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/upnorthlive.com\/news\/local\/wildfire-smoke-cuts-mackinac-bridge-visibility-drivers-urged-to-slow-to-20-mph\">UpNorthLive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The air quality in all of these cities is considered to be hazardous to health. We also see an increased need for rescue medicine for people with lung disease, and an increased need for people to visit their doctor in general because of some unexplained symptoms,\u201d lung Dr. Erika Moseson told the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/blog\/wildfire-smoke-nationwide\">American Lung Association<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Exposure for several days at unhealthy levels is considered to be the same as smoking about seven cigarettes a day if someone is outdoors the entire time, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woods.stanford.edu\/news\/health-impacts-wildfire-smoke\">Stanford University<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>The negative impacts of wildfire smoke aren\u2019t always immediate, either, with deaths occurring for up to three years after the fire has been put out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2286255945.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Haze from Canadian wildfires blankets the Manhattan skyline on Wednesday in New York City. Wildfire smoke brings dangerous particle pollution that can harm the lungs (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Children, seniors, people who are immunocompromised and pregnant women are the most at risk. <\/p>\n<p>But there are steps people can take to protect themselves. <\/p>\n<p>Wearing protective face masks, staying aware of the air quality levels and making sure all doors and windows are sealed tight are all good strategies to reduce exposure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen air quality is poor, limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, consider exercising indoors and postpone or reschedule outdoor activities when possible.,\u201d Dr. Farhan M.
