Prime Minister Mark Carney has released the names of his new advisory committee on Canada-U.S. economic relations.<\/p>\n

The list includes experts, industry and union leaders and retired high-profile politicians such as former Quebec Premier Jean Charest, former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole and former Conservative cabinet minister Lisa Raitt.<\/p>\n

According to a government statement, the committee will serve as a forum where members can develop strategy for how Canada should approach its economic relationship with the U.S.<\/p>\n

“I’m very pleased to have that group. It’s a diverse, diverse group. Leaders in from the union movement experts in industry and CEOs and finance and across across the economy,” Carney said on his way into a cabinet meeting Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the prime minister said that his government’s goal in the upcoming review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) is to secure “a strong economic partnership with the United States that creates greater certainty, security, and prosperity for all.”<\/p>\n

The committee, which will meet for the first time on Monday, will be led by Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade.<\/p>\n

In a statement, LeBlanc said the committee will help the government stay closely connected to key industrial sectors in Canada as it enters “a new economic and security relationship with the U.S.”<\/p>\n

“Canada is strongest when governments, workers, businesses and industry leaders pull in the same direction.”<\/p>\n

The members of the committee include:<\/p>\n

Candace Laing, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n

Darryl White, CEO of the Bank of Montreal.<\/p>\n

Lisa Raitt, former Conservative cabinet minister.<\/p>\n

Tracy Robinson, president and CEO of the Canadian National Railway.<\/p>\n

Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.<\/p>\n

Ron Bedard, president and CEO of steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal Dofasco.<\/p>\n

Ken Seitz, president and CEO of fertilizer giant Nutrien.<\/p>\n

Dennis Darby, president and CEO at Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters.<\/p>\n

Lana Payne, national president of Unifor.<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois Poirier, president and CEO of Calgary-based TC Energy.<\/p>\n

\u00c9mile Cordeau, CEO of Agropur, the largest dairy co-operative in Canada.<\/p>\n

Luc Th\u00e9riault, CEO of Pulp and Wood Products, and president of Domtar Canada.<\/p>\n

Michael Harvey, executive director of the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance.<\/p>\n

Tabatha Bull, president and CEO of Canadian Council for Indigenous Business.<\/p>\n

Cameron Bailey, CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Justin Trudeau struck a similar advisory committee<\/a> during the trilateral negotiations that led to CUSMA during U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term in office. The trade agreement is up for a review this year.<\/p>\n

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday, according to a joint statement released by Greer’s office<\/a>. That statement indicated that the U.S. and Mexico will hold an “official bilateral negotiating round” in late May.<\/p>\n

Asked on Monday if Canada has an official start date for negotiations, a spokesperson for LeBlanc didn’t offer a specific timeline, but said officials are “engaging on an ongoing basis with their U.S. counterparts.”<\/p>\n

“Canada is prepared; we have submitted a number of proposals to the Americans. We are ready to do the work to get to a deal very quickly, and will certainly not be the source of any delay,” the spokesperson said in an email.<\/p>\n

Poilievre questions Carney’s approach<\/p>\n

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said it was “great” that O’Toole had been named to the council but said he wants to see more action on the trade front from the prime minister.<\/p>\n

“What has Mark Carney done, really, in a year on this?” Poilievre asked Tuesday in Ottawa. “He hasn’t held negotiations in five months, the Mexicans are going to be at the table formally with the Americans any day, the only talks that Mark Carney is doing are YouTube videos.”<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Carney released a video<\/a> in which he said Canada’s ties to the U.S. have become “weaknesses” that must be corrected, pointing out that workers in Canada’s auto, steel and lumber industries remain under threat due to Trump’s tariffs.<\/p>\n

Poilievre called that video “showboating” and suggested that Carney has not made his intentions or plans clear when it comes to managing the economic relationship with the U.S.<\/p>\n
