Bryan Steil, Derrick Van Orden, Scott Fitzgerald, Glenn Grothman, Tom Tiffany and Tony Wied asked the agency to review available actions under the U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement to respond to repeated smoke events affecting the state.

“Record-breaking wildfire smoke is inflicting real harm on Wisconsin families. We cannot allow this to continue,” the lawmakers wrote. “Canada must meet its clean air promise and prevent future wildfires from impacting Wisconsin families.”

The lawmakers said smoke from Canadian wildfires has pushed air quality in parts of Wisconsin to hazardous levels, with some readings topping 500 on the Air Quality Index. They said Milwaukee, Brown, Waukesha and Kenosha counties were among the areas hit hardest.

Milwaukee recorded an AQI of 644 on Thursday, the city’s worst air quality on record. On Thursday, July 16, five of the world’s 10 worst air quality readings were reported in southern Wisconsin, they said.

Wildfire smoke can carry pollutants including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter, which can worsen respiratory and heart conditions and pose risks to children, older adults and people with underlying health problems.

The lawmakers are asking the EPA to use provisions in the U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement, signed in 1991 and expanded in 2000, to press Canada for action. The agreement allows the United States to raise concerns about particulate emissions and seek consultations with Canadian officials within 30 days.

If the two countries cannot resolve the issue, the agreement allows for formal negotiations or referral to a third party.

The letter asks the EPA to use that process to address the effects of ongoing wildfire smoke and explore steps to reduce future impacts on Wisconsin and other parts of the Great Lakes region and Northeast.

You can read the letter here.

Wisconsin Republicans urge EPA to hold Canada accountable for wildfire smoke Wisconsin GOP lawmakers are urging EPA action…

[2
44361,17,43480,44362,44363,43001,43592,44364,44365,44367,44366,44368,44369,44370,44371,44372,44320,44373
post-133532","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-canada","tag-bryan-steil","tag-canada","tag-canada-wildfire-smoke","tag-epa","tag-glenn-grothman","tag-great-lakes","tag-hazardous-air","tag-kenosha-county","tag-lee-zeldin","tag-milwaukee-air-quality","tag-milwaukee-aqi","tag-scott-fitzgerald","tag-tom-tiffany","tag-tony-wied","tag-u-s-canada-air-quality-agreement","tag-waukesha-county","tag-wisconsin-air-quality","tag-wisconsin-wildfire-smoke
["GET
