On July 5, officers responded to reports of a shooting<\/a> at the intersection of Edenbrook Hill Drive and Earlsbridge Boulevard around 3:40 p.m. and found a 20-year-old Brampton man with multiple gunshot wounds, Peel police Det. Sgt. Adam Minnion said Saturday.<\/p>\nPeel police said the man was taken to a trauma centre, where he later died from his injuries. Minnion said the victim’s family has requested he not be publicly identified.<\/p>\n
Investigators are now identifying two 17-year-old brothers from Brampton, Shemii Whittaker and Shemel Whittaker, as suspects in the case, Minnion said at a news conference Saturday.<\/p>\n
Anyone under the age of 18 generally cannot be publicly named as a suspect, in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. A court order allows the publication of the names and photos of the two boys until Wednesday.<\/p>\n
They are both wanted on charges for first-degree murder.<\/p>\n
Minnion warned members of the public to call 911 and not approach the boys if seen, as they are considered to be armed and dangerous.<\/p>\n
He said the shooting is believed to be targeted with some “pre-existing relationship” between the victim and suspects. He added that the firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered.<\/p>\n
“The overarching public safety isn’t at great concern albeit the significance of the offence and the weapons that were used is of concern to us,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Anyone found harbouring or assisting the suspect may be arrested and charged,” said police in a news release.<\/p>\n
Minnion advised the suspects to seek legal counsel and turn themselves in to police.<\/p>\n
