{"id":137522,"date":"2026-07-21T04:15:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T04:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/137522\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T04:15:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T04:15:43","slug":"trump-slaps-50-tariffs-on-canada-goods-on-trade-discrimination-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/137522\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump slaps 50% tariffs on Canada goods on trade discrimination claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump speaks after signing an executive order to drastically shrink two national monuments in Utah, paving the way for fossil fuel extraction and mining. <\/p>\n<p>Saul Loeb | AFP | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is imposing additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/trade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50% tariffs<\/a> on a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/08\/meta-is-building-its-first-big-data-center-in-canada-amid-ai-push.html?&amp;qsearchterm=canadian%20goods\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian<\/a> goods in response to alleged trade discrimination against multiple U.S. products and industries, senior Trump administration officials said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> signed three proclamations Monday targeting different sets of Canadian imports with the steep tariffs in response to separate areas \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/07\/imposing-additional-duties-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-motor-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">motor vehicles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/07\/imposing-additional-duties-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-alcoholic-beverages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">alcohol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/07\/imposing-additional-duties-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-dairy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dairy<\/a> \u2014 where the U.S. says it has been treated unfairly, the officials said in a call with reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The tariffs, which fall under the rarely used Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, are set to take effect 30 days after the signings, according to the officials.<\/p>\n<p>Each proclamation slaps tariffs on different Canadian products, &#8220;ranging from wine to hockey sticks to cement,&#8221; an official on the call said.<\/p>\n<p>The new tariffs &#8220;apply to all covered goods,&#8221; regardless of whether they are otherwise covered under the existing free trade agreement between the U.S. and Canada, the official said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canada has to be held accountable for this continued discrimination,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Premier Doug Ford <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fordnation\/status\/2079318700797153542?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on X<\/a> later Monday afternoon that Canada &#8220;should respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar&#8221; if the new U.S. import duties proceed.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Embassy in Washington, did not immediately respond to CNBC&#8217;s request for comment on the new U.S. trade actions.<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC politics coverage<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s status as the U.S.&#8217;s long-time close ally and trade partner has eroded amid Trump&#8217;s tariff-heavy agenda and vocal displeasure with the nations&#8217; trilateral trade pact including Mexico, among other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/14\/america-is-not-canada-pm-carney-says-in-rebuke-to-trump.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sources of tension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. and Canada engaged in escalating trade fight last year, as Trump slapped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/12\/canada-tariffs-steel-aluminum-trump-computers.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heavy tariffs<\/a> on Canadian goods and Ottawa retaliated.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Trump administration said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/01\/trump-usmca-canada-mexico-trade-treaty.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would not renew<\/a> that trade agreement, known as USMCA, opting instead to cast a shadow over the treaty&#8217;s future by triggering a series of annual reviews. <\/p>\n<p>Last week, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/17\/trump-canada-wildfire-tariffs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tore into Canada<\/a> over the wildfires blazing through northwestern Ontario, which led to major air pollution issues across large areas of the U.S. mainland.<\/p>\n<p>Claiming the issue has harmed the U.S. to the tune of billions of dollars, Trump wrote on Truth Social that those costs &#8220;must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the senior officials on Monday specified that the newly announced 50% tariffs on Canadian goods are not related to the wildfires \u2014 but added that Trump &#8220;has asked for options on that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Section 338 gives the president the power to impose tariffs of up to 50% on the goods of countries found to be discriminating against the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The obscure tariff-setting authority has &#8220;gone unused for decades,&#8221; John Veroneau and Catherine Gibson of law firm Covington and Burling LLP wrote in a 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cov.com\/-\/media\/files\/corporate\/publications\/2016\/12\/law360_the_presidents_long_forgotten_power_to_raise_tariffs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">article<\/a>.
