More than 930 wildfires are burning across Canada as of Monday, with several threatening communities and forcing residents to flee or prepare to evacuate at a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n

The fires have also sent smoke billowing to other parts of the country and beyond its borders, prompting air quality warnings from Environment Canada and the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Two days after threatening new tariffs on Canada over wildfire smoke<\/a>, U.S. President Donald Trump brought up the matter with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the World Cup final on Sunday. <\/p>\n

Trump said he told Carney that Canada must do better at controlling Ontario wildfires, the origin of the smoke the president said on Friday had \u201cinvaded\u201d American cities on Friday and still lingers across much of the U.S. midwest.<\/p>\n

Carney has not directly responded to Trump, though he has said all countries including the U.S. must do more to address climate change. <\/p>\n

The prime minister said Sunday more than 5,000 firefighters<\/a> and nearly 300 waterbombers and other aircraft are battling blazes.<\/p>\n

Is the U.S. helping Canada with its wildfire response?<\/p>\n

Several U.S. states sent firefighters to help Canada during the 2025 wildfire season, but so far no American help has been sent this year.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said it\u2019s \u201cunacceptable\u201d<\/a> that Trump has chosen to criticize Canada\u2019s wildfire response and threaten tariffs rather than sending help, like the province has helped U.S. states during past disasters.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than criticize and threaten Canada, your closest friends, maybe one day you\u2019re going to need our help,\u201d Ford said.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff of California criticized Trump and said states should \u201cshow some humanity\u201d and step up to help their neighbours \u201cwithout the threats.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen California was burning, Canada sent fire fighters, planes and assistance \u2014 not insults,\u201d the Democrat said in a post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n
