50% Tariffs Signed<\/p>\n

The tariffs are set to take effect in 30 days, and the White House said they will apply even to goods previously protected from import taxes under the USMCA, while excluding energy products, potash, fish, critical minerals, and products already subject to national-security tariffs such as steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n

NPR reported the administration previewed the action by saying Canada is one of the only nations other than China that retaliated against Trump\u2019s previous tariffs and must be held accountable, and it said Trump signed three proclamations under Section 338 of the 1930 Trade Act.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said, \u201cCanada stands ready to engage intensively to address outstanding issues with the US to the mutual benefit of our citizens,\u201d as the BBC described the decision as a \u201ctough choice\u201d for Ottawa to fight back or hold firm.<\/p>\n

The BBC also said the levies will come into force on 19 August, linking the timing to on-again talks to renew the North American free trade agreement with Mexico known as the USMCA.<\/p>\n

A senior administration official told reporters the tariffs are meant to \u201chold\u201d Canada \u201caccountable\u201d for \u201csubstantial retaliation against the United States,\u201d and the official pointed to provinces halting the purchase, distribution, or retailing of U.S. alcoholic beverages while not imposing similar restrictions on other countries.<\/p>\n

The White House also framed the action as leveling the playing field for \u201cmotor vehicles, alcohol, and dairy,\u201d while ABC News reported the president signed three proclamations under Section 338 imposing \u201cadditional 50% tariffs on certain goods of Canada in response to these discriminatory measures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott Lincicome of the Cato Institute said the invocation of 338 is \u201cthe nuclear option for Trump tariffs,\u201d and NPR quoted him saying, \u201cWe crossed the Rubicon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardian reported that several Democratic lawmakers proposed repealing Section 338 because they said Trump could use it to destabilize the economy, and it said Trump signed three proclamations to launch the tariffs under Section 338 of the 1930 Trade Act.<\/p>\n

In a statement carried by El Mundo, Jamieson Greer said, \u201cTCanada has removed American alcoholic beverages from Canadian shelves (…) and imposed a cap on U.S.-made vehicle exports to Canada,\u201d as the dispute escalated into a new round of tariffs.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s at Risk Next<\/p>\n

The BBC said pollster David Coletto, CEO of Abacus Data, described \u201cdeep anger\u201d among many Canadians over what they view as unfair treatment from the US, adding that \u201cmost people do not want Mark Carney to cave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ontario Premier Doug Ford posted on social media that, \u201cIf these tariffs proceed, Canada should respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar,\u201d while Candace Laing, CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said the two countries need to use the 30-day window before the tariffs start \u201cto make meaningful progress in advancing formal talks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Time Magazine reported that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives said Trump\u2019s proclamations cover nearly $20 billion in imports from Canada, or about 5.2% of the almost $382 billion worth of goods the U.S. imported from Canada in 2025, and it said the refusal to renew the USMCA has mired trade ties in further uncertainty.<\/p>\n
