WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2014 Last week, more than 100 million Americans were under air quality alerts as wildfire smoke from Canada blanketed parts of the U.S.<\/p>\n
Roughly 200 wildfires \u2014 that are still burning in Ontario \u2014 sent thick clouds of smoke over several states and cities, especially in the Great Lakes region.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re not managing their forests properly,\u201d said President Trump on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The recent smoke from Canadian wildfires prompted criticism from President Donald Trump, who wrote on Truth Social Friday that Canada has refused to engage in \u201cbasic forest management and debris removal,\u201d adding that the cost of the pollution must \u201cbe added to the tariffs Canada is currently paying.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, the president is the president. He\u2019s not a guy that\u2019s going to sit back and say, \u2018Well, there\u2019s nothing I can do about it.\u2019 I guarantee you he\u2019s going to push for something that\u2019s going to take place and it\u2019s always going to be in the positive interests of the United States of America,\u201d said Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa.<\/p>\n
Republicans from Great Lakes states \u2014 hit hardest by the smoke \u2014 agree that Canada needs to take action.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, that\u2019s on them. That\u2019s a lack of leadership. A lack of caring,\u201d said Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich.<\/p>\n
Parts of Congressman Bergman\u2019s district, in Michigan\u2019s Upper Peninsula, saw some of the worst air quality in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cMichigan was really affected,\u201d said Trump.<\/p>\n
Bergman supports the idea of helping Canada, but only if they foot the bill.<\/p>\n
\u201cWould be more than happy them. If they can\u2019t do it, they can pay us, one way or another. But the bottom line is we\u2019d be more than happy to help them manage their self-inflicted issue,\u201d said Bergman.<\/p>\n
But just as the smoke began to clear early this week, the president imposed a 50% tariff on the U.S.\u2019s neighbor to the north.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s not even supposed to be the one issuing tariffs anyway. It\u2019s supposed to be Congress,\u201d said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.<\/p>\n
The White House says the new tariffs, which target Canadian goods \u2014 from wine and hockey sticks to cement and machinery \u2014 are in response to Canada\u2019s \u201cdiscriminatory treatment of American products.\u201d<\/p>\n
Democrats call the move illegal \u2014 and one that will hurt the economy.<\/p>\n
\u201c50 percent\u2019s really going to hurt New Yorkers because they\u2019re putting tariffs on food that we eat, on lumber, on the housing that we\u2019re going to build. The costs will rise for housing and food because of those tariffs,\u201d said Gillibrand.<\/p>\n
Now, leaders in Ontario are threatening to fight back.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wants to continue threatening and he\u2019s nothing but a bully. That\u2019s all he is. And you have to stand up to the bullies in the schoolyard or they end up taking your lunch money. And we are going to continue fighting like we\u2019ve never fought before,\u201d said Doug Ford, the Premier of Ontario.<\/p>\n
