Eni to take stake in Canada\u2019s Nouveau Monde Graphite in $70 million investment<\/p>\n

MILAN, April 10 (Reuters) \u2013 Italy\u2019s Eni (ENI.MI), <\/a> has agreed to acquire a minority stake in natural graphite producer Nouveau Monde \u200bGraphite (NOU.TO)<\/a>, for $70 million, giving it access to a \u200ccritical material used in battery storage and other energy transition technologies.<\/p>\n

The investment in the Canadian company will allow the Italian \u200benergy group to enter the critical minerals value \u200bchain at a time when European companies are \u2060seeking to reduce their dependence<\/a> on materials sourced from \u200bChina.<\/p>\n

The transaction will also give Eni the option to \u200bnegotiate exclusive supply agreements for graphite and other materials to support its gigafactory<\/a> initiative to produce stationary lithium batteries in southern Italy.<\/p>\n

The \u200bItalian group said the investment forms part of a $297 \u200bmillion capital increase at Nouveau Monde Graphite, alongside Canadian institutional investors \u200cCanada \u2060Growth Fund and Investissement Quebec, as well as a public equity raise.<\/p>\n

Following completion of the transaction, Eni is expected to hold about 11.5% of Nouveau Monde \u200bGraphite\u2019s share capital \u200band will \u2060gain a seat on the company\u2019s board.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the capital increase will support development \u200bof the Matawinie Mine, a high-quality natural \u200bgraphite \u2060project, and the company\u2019s operations across the supply chain including refining at its Becancour Battery Material Plant.<\/p>\n

The transaction \u2060is \u200bsubject to approval by Nouveau Monde \u200bGraphite\u2019s shareholders at an annual meeting scheduled for the second half of \u200bMay 2026.<\/p>\n
