The Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> have spent much of this offseason trying to change the identity of the hockey club. New general manager John Chayka didn\u2019t sit around waiting for answers to appear. He made changes quickly, reshaping the defence, adding different types of forwards and putting together a coaching staff that seems built around a more structured, playoff-style approach.<\/p>\n

But even after all the moves, there are still questions hanging around this team. That\u2019s what happens in Toronto. Every summer brings a new collection of questions, and this year is no different. The team may look deeper and tougher, but the real challenge is figuring out which final pieces actually matter. <\/p>\n

Do they need another veteran like David Perron, or is it finally time to see what the kids already in the organization can do? That includes perhaps the biggest question: what to do with Gavin McKenna?<\/p>\n

David Perron Might Make Sense. But Should the Maple Leafs Trust Their Young Players?<\/p>\n

There is no question David Perron<\/a> would be an interesting fit for the Maple Leafs. The veteran forward has played more than 1,200 NHL games, won a Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues and understands what it takes to survive when the games become tighter and more physical. A player like Perron brings more than goals and assists. He brings experience, leadership and a voice<\/a> in the dressing room.<\/p>\n

Last season, split between the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings, Perron produced 13 goals and 15 assists in 56 games. Those aren\u2019t superstar numbers, but that isn\u2019t why teams would be interested. He is the type of player who can slide into a bottom-six role, move up the lineup when injuries hit, and provide a calming presence on a younger team. If the Maple Leafs are looking for a one-year addition, Perron would make plenty of sense.<\/p>\n

That said, the bigger question is whether Toronto actually needs another veteran forward. For years, the organization often filled holes by bringing in experienced players instead of giving younger players a chance to grow into those jobs. That approach made sense when the organization was trying to maximize every season of its championship window. But Chayka appears to be building something slightly different.<\/p>\n

At some point, the Maple Leafs have to find out what they have internally. Players like Easton Cowan, Jacob Quillan<\/a>, Ryan Tverberg, and Luke Haymes need opportunities to show they belong<\/a>. Signing Perron wouldn\u2019t be a mistake, but there is also value in letting a young player struggle through mistakes and eventually earn a bigger role. Championship teams need veterans, but they also need players who develop into important pieces.<\/p>\n

What to Do With Gavin McKenna\u2019s Development <\/p>\n

One of the most interesting Maple Leafs storylines heading into the 2026-27 season may not involve a trade or free-agent signing. It could be how Toronto handles Gavin McKenna<\/a>\u2019s development. The young forward arrives with enormous expectations, and in Toronto, those expectations can grow faster than the player does.<\/p>\n

Assistant general manager Ryan Hardy recently suggested McKenna\u2019s skill set<\/a> could make him a natural fit alongside Auston Matthews. His ability to make plays through the middle of the ice and create offence while carrying possession is a unique skill set. But putting an 18-year-old beside the captain would also bring a massive spotlight.<\/p>\n

Hardy\u2019s comments about managing expectations were fair. Every young player goes through struggles, and McKenna will have nights where he looks like a future star and others where he looks like a teenager learning the NHL game. But there is also a bit of a contradiction. If the Maple Leafs put him on the top line with Matthews, they are helping create those expectations themselves.<\/p>\n

Toronto cannot ask fans to see him as a potential replacement for a departed star and then be surprised when the pressure follows. The challenge will be finding the balance between giving McKenna an opportunity and allowing him to develop without carrying unrealistic expectations.<\/p>\n

That balance may be the biggest test for John Chayka and the new Maple Leafs management group. This is not a rebuilding season where Toronto can simply hand McKenna big minutes and accept the growing pains.<\/p>\n

The team believes it is ready to compete now, which means every decision has to consider both the player\u2019s future and the team\u2019s immediate goals. How Jim Hiller uses McKenna, where he fits in the lineup and how the organization protects him from the noise will be one of the most fascinating stories of the season. The Maple Leafs are not just trying to build a winner today \u2014 they are trying to build the next version of the team, and McKenna may be the first major test of that plan.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Next for the Maple Leafs?<\/p>\n

The next step for the Maple Leafs is not necessarily another big move. It may be patience. Chayka has already changed the look of this roster, and now the organization has to find out what this new group can become. Adding a player like Perron could help, but giving young players a real opportunity could be just as important.<\/p>\n

The biggest questions won\u2019t be answered in August or September. They will come in April and May, when the Maple Leafs need depth scoring, defensive reliability and goaltending under pressure. That is when the decisions made this summer will either look smart or leave the organization wondering what it missed.<\/p>\n
