Toronto Police Service has released an image of what they say may be the vehicle involved in the attacks on two Jewish-owned bakeries in Toronto over the weekend.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, July 26 at approximately 8 a.m., TPS were notified \u201cof two firearm discharge incidents targeting separate locations of the same Jewish-owned bakery chain\u201d says a Monday morning release. On Sunday, just hours after the incidents were reported, police confirmed that only one of the two attacks involved a firearm.<\/p>\n

Police also now say that on Saturday, July 25, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a dark-coloured SUV pulled up in front of the Kiva\u2019s Bagel Bakery<\/a> on Steeles Avenue West, and \u201cmoments later, the front glass of the bakery shattered and the vehicle fled southbound on Carpenter Road.\u201d About an hour later, a dark-coloured SUV \u2013 which investigators believe is the same vehicle \u2013 pulled up in front of the Kiva\u2019s bakery on St. Clair Avenue West and \u201ca firearm was discharged from the vehicle, striking the front windows of the bakery,\u201d adding that evidence of gunfire was located at the second scene.<\/p>\n

Investigations are being led by the TPS Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force, with support from the Hate Crime Unit, to identify those responsible and includes an extensive video canvass of both areas. Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed either incident, has dash-camera or security video from the areas at the relevant times, or has information that may assist investigators, to contact police at 416-808-2510.<\/p>\n

Police were first called shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday<\/a> to the Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West area after reports of a shattered window. Investigators found evidence that a firearm had been discharged but no injuries were reported. Less than 20 minutes later, officers responded to another Kiva\u2019s location, about 14 km north near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West, after receiving reports of a broken window. Police found no evidence of gunfire or injuries reported at that location.<\/p>\n

No suspect descriptions have been provided.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters about three hours after it was reported, TPS Duty Insp. Scott Bradbury said investigators believe the attacks are connected and are treating them as suspected hate-motivated offences. \u201cRight now, we don\u2019t know what the connection is other than that it\u2019s the same Jewish-owned business chain and that it happened sometime overnight.\u201d He said police \u201cunderstand that this is concerning for those that work and live in this area, especially members of the Jewish community, and we have all the resources available to thoroughly investigate this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monday morning, Toronto police reported an early morning shooting<\/a> outside the United States Consulate in downtown Toronto. TPS says officers heard a firearm being discharged in the area at 4:46 a.m. and a white sedan was seen fleeing the scene. At a news conference Monday, police identified the car as a late-model Honda Accord, with no licence plate. Police pursued the car north on the Don Valley Parkway, but the chase was called off because of concerns about public safety, Deputy Chief of Police Frank Barredo said at a news conference. There are no suspect descriptions or any reported injuries.<\/p>\n

Police arrested three people after a shooting at the consulate on March 10. Constable Marc Pinizzotto was killed June 11 while executing a search warrant in that case.<\/p>\n

Just last month The CJN reported that Toronto-area shootings<\/a> of synagogues, a Jewish school, the U.S. Consulate in March, and dozens of others, were committed by a network of mostly young people hired online through encrypted messaging apps.<\/p>\n

It is too early in the investigation to determine if the shooters at the U.S. Consulate were hired through this network, Barredo said.<\/p>\n

In September, a Montreal man, Mohamed Ilyes Akodad, will be sentenced for the December 2024 firebombing<\/a> of a suburban Montreal synagogue, after pleading guilty to three arson-related charges, telling the court last month that he was hired to do it by an unnamed person through a Signal FaceTime call, who he could not identify.<\/p>\n
