Canada will send senior trade officials to Washington, setting the stage for tense talks.

Washington, July 28 – the U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he is indifferent to updating the USMCA, even as Canada announced plans to send senior trade officials to Washington for further talks this week amid new tariffs and rising trade tensions.

I don’t care. I mean, I really don’t want this. I’d rather be independent. Here’s the deal: Mexico and Canada need us. We don’t need them. The deal matters to them. It doesn’t matter to us.

– Donald Trump

Trump, who on July 1 declined to extend the USMCA, said on the Fox News Channel program “Fox and Friends” that the six-year trade agreement was more important for the United States and its North American neighbors.

The president’s decision not to extend the USMCA during the planned review sparked a process of phased unwinding of the pact if the three countries fail to agree on changes before the previously stated deadline.

The administration’s trade chief Jamieson Greer held the third round of negotiations with Mexico last week aimed at updating USMCA, but the talks revealed deep differences over how to strengthen the regional-content rules in the auto sector. Trump imposed tariffs covering cars and trucks manufactured in Mexico and Canada, with a 25% tariff for national security and 50% on their steel and aluminum products.

The tariff measures put Mexico and Canada at a trade disadvantage relative to South Korea, Japan, and the European Union, but his remarks indicate that he believes his strategy will be effective in bringing production back to the United States. He cited Toyota’s recent announcement to invest $3.6 billion to expand truck production in Texas, to assemble there a pickup that is currently assembled in Mexico.

We have the hottest auto business. We are now building more car plants than ever in our history.

– Donald Trump

Canada seeks greater participation in negotiations

Canada has not yet been involved in formal USMCA negotiations, but remains in contact with Jamieson Greer at a high level.

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister responsible for trade with the United States, will travel to Washington for a meeting this week, his spokesman said, marking the first in-person negotiations since the U.S. government announced additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods, including hockey sticks, beer, and other items.

A spokesperson for the Office of the United States Trade Representative did not respond to questions regarding plans for negotiations this week.

According to the USTR, tariffs covering about $20 billion of Canadian imports are a response to Canada’s actions in retaliation to U.S. tariffs and their policy toward the automotive and steel sectors, as well as the lack of concessions in access to the Canadian dairy market.

Following the tariff announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carni said that he and Trump had agreed to intensify trade talks.

Labor unions urge a review of tariffs

Dominic LeBlanc will accompany Canadian negotiator Janice Charette during the trip, a spokesman said, not naming specific dates.

Canadian calls for tariff relief received support from two leading industrial unions on Tuesday: United Steelworkers and the International Association of Machinists – they urged Greer to review tariffs on Canadian goods and work with Canadian allies to counter unfair trade practices and strengthen mutual prosperity.

Our two countries have deep cooperation, built on decades of economic integration, as well as collaboration in intelligence and defense.

– United Steelworkers International President Roxanne Brown

In response to inquiries about the progress of talks, representatives said the two countries would continue discussions and work on ways to resolve trade differences and mutual restrictions.

In summary, the USMCA review continues in the context of tensions among the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a focus on market access terms, local-content rules, and tariff changes that could affect the region’s economy. Talks will continue as the parties seek compromises that will strengthen mutually beneficial trade in North America.

Trump’s blunt dismissal of a USMCA update surprised allies and raised immediate pressure on negotiators to resolve tariff…

[2
36954,17,47880,116,5971,47881,47879
post-147414","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-canada","tag-automotive-tariffs","tag-canada","tag-canada-trade-talks","tag-news","tag-trump-tariffs","tag-usmca-update","tag-usmca-update-trump-tariffs-canada-trade-talks-automotive-tariffs
["GET
