Image: Official photo.<\/p>\n<p>(Bloomberg) \u2013 Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the notion that Canada should curb the supply of vital resources to the U.S. to retaliate against tariffs, arguing that it\u2019s more important for the country to keep its reputation as a dependable producer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a reliable supplier is important,\u201d Carney told reporters Wednesday in response to a question about the trade war. \u201cPeople trust us. And so when you\u2019re a supplier of a key commodity, key service, you\u2019ve got to think really hard about not supplying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canadian officials examined the possibility of\u00a0using export taxes\u00a0on key commodities such as oil, uranium and potash to drive up US costs in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s trade policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some provincial officials have pointed out that Canada is\u00a0by far America\u2019s largest foreign source of oil, making fuel a potential point of leverage in contentious trade negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between the U.S. and Canada ratcheted up again this month when Trump threatened\u00a0to slap 50% import taxes on a range of Canadian-made goods if Carney\u2019s government fails to address American trade complaints about autos, alcohol and dairy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Carney, who was visiting Canada\u2019s oil heartland of Alberta, appeared to rule out any use of export curbs or taxes on key resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see the value of it,\u201d he said when asked about using oil as retaliation, stressing that Canada is known as a \u201creliable\u201d oil producer. \u201cThere\u2019s other things we can do if we need it, to address the situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The latest threat from Trump and his officials would see new tariffs on products such as milk, hockey equipment, beer and plywood\u2014but not on commodities like oil and potash that the U.S. buys from Canada in large quantities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canadian trade officials are in Washington this week to hold talks with their U.S. counterparts, and Carney has said his government\u2019s primary aim is to reach a comprehensive agreement\u00a0that benefits both countries.<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s also said \u201call options\u201d are on the table for Canada\u2019s response if the White House goes ahead with more levies, a comment that appeared to open the door to retaliatory measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump has set a deadline of Aug. 19 before the new tariffs would kick in.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#13; &#13; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
