{"id":149328,"date":"2026-07-30T07:15:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T07:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/149328\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T07:15:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T07:15:12","slug":"carney-comes-to-alberta-talks-housing-rides-a-sprayer-hears-from-separatists-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/149328\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney comes to Alberta, talks housing, rides a sprayer, hears from separatists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Mark Carney came to the Alberta heartland Wednesday to announce housing money, sit shotgun on a canola sprayer and catch an earful \u2014 at a distance \u2014 from flag-waving separatists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carney, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at his side, announced $510 million in federal funding for municipalities to build water and wastewater infrastructure to support new homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStrong communities start right here, they start with housing,\u201d Carney told reporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA home needs more than four walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt also needs clean drinking water and a reliable sewage system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said Alberta will contribute at least one-third of eligible project costs \u2014 worth up to $428 million \u2014 for a province that has seen 600,000 more people over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBuilders can only build when the infrastructure is there to support new communities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA whole lot of work has to happen in the background, and literally under the ground, before the first shovel ever breaks the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"747\" data-attachment-id=\"81806\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/calgaryjournal.ca\/2026\/07\/29\/carney-comes-to-alberta-talks-housing-rides-a-sprayer-hears-from-separatists\/alta-carney-20260729\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calgaryjournal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/28f52f4fde88ea0c4218801e708c72a0dc50120901cd9ac217bbfc0ddf6d4ea4-scaled.jpg?fit=2560%2C1868&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1868\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"Alta Carney 20260729\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Prime Minister Mark Carney, left, and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith tour an apartment before making a housing announcement in Red Deer, Alta., Wednesday, July 29, 2026. PHOTO: JEFF MCINTOSH, THE CANADIAN PRESS<\/p>\n<p>Referendum to be voted on Oct. 19 to decide Alberta\u2019s future<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith and Carney also touted shared projects, including on energy, hashed out over multiple recent meetings together or with other premiers and leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe premier said \u2014 I think she regrets this \u2014 that she has seen more of me than her husband,\u201d he joked as Smith laughed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said it\u2019s the 10th time he has come back to his home province since the 2025 election win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the two levels of government \u201chave shared ambitions and a shared sense of purpose and urgency to get things done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit comes as Alberta is now less than three months away from a referendum on whether it should stay in Canada or hold a second referendum to vote on whether it\u2019s time to launch the formal process of breaking away from Confederation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith ordered up the Oct. 19 referendum by noting hundreds of thousands have signed petitions for and against separation, and that it\u2019s time to put the issue to rest once and for all. Critics, pointing to opinion polls showing massive support for Alberta staying in Canada, have accused Smith of ordering up the vote only to placate restive separatist hardliners in her United Conservative Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debate has reared an ugly head at times. A recent rodeo parade in Sundre was cancelled after a float festooned with Alberta flags was rejected as incendiary \u2014 leading to threats and anger directed toward parade organizers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Cold Lake caf\u00e9 owner said he closed up his teetering business for good after he alienated some customers by hosting a pro-separation event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Carney spoke Wednesday in the hot summer sun, chants and shouts could be heard from a distant group of Alberta-flag waving separatist supporters. Later Wednesday, he saw the canola up close at Antler Valley Farm, south of Red Deer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was hosted by Scott McAllister and his father, Wayne. Carney climbed aboard a massive blue-coloured sprayer \u2014 a mister of nutrients and insecticides \u2014 with tires that matched him in height.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sat beside the driver as the machine inched out of a Quonset hut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also got a crash course on determining the quality of canola.
