Ltd., Pembina Pipeline Corp., Power Corp. of Canada, TC Energy Corp. and TMX Group Ltd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., Mastercard Inc., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/international-business\/article-shell-profit-more-than-doubles-to-98-billion-as-iran-war-lifts-prices\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/international-business\/article-shell-profit-more-than-doubles-to-98-billion-as-iran-war-lifts-prices\/\">Shell PLC<\/a> and Stryker Corp. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cUncertainty about U.S. monetary policy, the sharp steepening of the Treasury yield curve, growing tensions in the Middle East and continued worries about the semiconductor industry and AI sector mean that markets are likely to stay volatile in the near term,\u201d said Vasu Menon, managing director of investment strategy at OCBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.51 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 rose 0.44 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX slipped 0.06 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gained 0.98 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.71 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng rose 0.20 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices rose for a second day as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-kuwait-jordan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-kuwait-jordan\/\">renewed attacks<\/a> between the United States and Iran disrupted oil flows through key shipping routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent futures rose 1.17 per cent to US$91.80 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 0.46 per cent to $84.85.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cUntil safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is no longer a gamble, the risk premium in oil is not going anywhere \u2013 hope for diplomacy is welcome, but the market is pricing the reality of ongoing strikes,\u201d said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was little changed at $4,062.30 an once. U.S. gold futures for August delivery gained 0.7 per cent to US$4,060.60.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 71.07 US cents to 71.28 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 0.91 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, gained 0.04 per cent to 100.770. The dollar was pegged at $1.4056. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro declined 0.16 per cent to US$1.145. The British pound shed 0.10 per cent to US$1.3355.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.703 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Bank of Japan monetary policy announcement, plus consumer confidence and machine tool orders<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Euro area GDP, economic confidence and employment data. Germany also releases inflation data<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Bank of England monetary policy meeting<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. weekly initial jobless claims<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. real GDP for the second quarter. Consensus is for 2.3-per-cent annual growth, accelerating from the previous quarter\u2019s 2.1 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. personal spending and personal income for June. Consensus is for a rise of 0.4 per cent and 0.3 per cent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. core PCE price index.
