Holidays out of town often include a visit to a local art gallery<\/a>. Why not do the same if you’re planning a staycation this summer?
From the institutional to the\u00a0commercial,\u00a0the Lower Mainland has\u00a0a packed palette of\u00a0great galleries\u00a0and public art\u00a0to check out.<\/p>\n

“Our doors are open to everyone. Whether\u00a0you’re\u00a0an experienced collector<\/a> or simply curious. We encourage people to come in, explore, ask questions, and spend time with the artwork,” said Fazakas Gallery owner LaTiesha Fazakas.<\/p>\n

To help you plan\u00a0some art-focused\u00a0day\u00a0tripping, here are\u00a0five art show suggestions to put on your summer<\/a> outing list.<\/p>\n

A Summer Hang\/Beau Dick<\/p>\n

Where: Fazakas Gallery (659 East Hastings St., Vancouver)<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Vancouver\u00a0gallery delivers\u00a0a dive into\u00a0Northwest\u00a0Coastal\u00a0art<\/a> with its A Summer Hang show. “Full of colour and movement,” the show features panels, paddles, masks, painting and sculpture.<\/p>\n

“These works demonstrate that Indigenous art is both deeply rooted in cultural knowledge and is unmistakably contemporary,” said Fazakas in an email to Postmedia. “Each artist brings a distinct voice and mastery of their medium, showing how art continues to carry stories, identity, innovation, and cultural continuity into the present.”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Fazakas\u00a0Gallery\u00a0also has a room\u00a0dedicated to\u00a0iconic\u00a0Kwakwaka’wakw\u00a0First Nation hereditary Chief<\/a> and master carver Beau Dick, including numerous large- and small-scale masks from 1984-2004.<\/p>\n

Within that room is also\u00a0a library dedicated to Northwest Coast art for visitors who would like to learn more.<\/p>\n

Takao Tanabe: Inside Passage<\/p>\n

Where: Audain Art Museum<\/a> (4350 Blackcomb Way, Whistler)<\/p>\n

When: Now until Oct. 19<\/p>\n

If you find yourself in Whistler, a trip to the Audain Art Museum<\/a> is always a must-do. Aside from the spectacular permanent collection, the museum is currently showing Takao Tanabe: Inside Passage.<\/p>\n

Celebrating the 100th birthday\u00a0of the highly influential B.C. artist, the exhibit, according to Curtis Collins<\/a>, the Audain’s executive-director, offers an, “Incredible range of his paintings that arc from highly abstract compositions of the 1950s to hyper-real landscapes created in the early 2000s.”<\/p>\n

Considered the most comprehensive display of Tanabe’s 70-year career, the exhibit is also accompanied by a full-colour\u00a0and bilingual book from\u00a0Goose Lane Editions and the National Gallery of Canada.<\/p>\n

Ongoing\/Pacific Crossings<\/p>\n

Where: Richmond\u00a0Art Gallery<\/a> | Richmond Cultural Centre (180-7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond)<\/p>\n

When: Now until\u00a0Oct. 4<\/p>\n

This\u00a0exhibition is the\u00a0result\u00a0of a seven-year cultural exchange between the Richmond Art Gallery<\/a>, independent curator Makiko Hara, and Nozomu\u00a0Ogawa, the\u00a0director of\u00a0Art Center\u00a0Ongoing, an alternative and experimental contemporary art gallery\u00a0in\u00a0Tokyo.<\/p>\n

The exhibition presents works\u00a0by\u00a0Japanese artists affiliated with Art Centre Ongoing, and Vancouver-based artist Karilynn Ming Ho.
“Displaying vibrant,\u00a0colourful, dreamy, playful and at times absurd art works,\u00a0Ongoing \/Pacific Crossings\u00a0highlights the eclectic range of contemporary art practices from Tokyo that examine new possibilities for alternativeness\u00a0\u2014\u00a0in both art and life,” said\u00a0Hara in an email.<\/p>\n

On until Sept. 5 at the Will Aballe gallery Bill Bissett: Over 40 Years of Art brings together paintings made between 1963 and 2021.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Bill Bissett: Over 40 Years of Art<\/p>\n

Where: Wil Aballe (1375 Railspur Alley, Vancouver)<\/p>\n

When: Now\u00a0until Sept. 5<\/p>\n

Spanning\u00a0nearly six\u00a0decades, Bill Bissett:\u00a0Over\u00a040 Years of Art\u00a0brings together paintings made between 1963 and 2021. The\u00a0pieces in the show are from private collections, allowing the gallery to\u00a0show\u00a0rarely seen\u00a0works.\u00a0Also included\u00a0in the\u00a0exhibit\u00a0of\u00a0around 25 pieces are\u00a0works from his\u00a0Bissett’s\u00a0landmark\u00a01984 Vancouver Art Gallery<\/a> solo exhibition, Fires in\u00a0the Tempul.<\/p>\n

Bissett, now\u00a086\u00a0years\u00a0old, is an\u00a0Order of Canada recipient and one of the\u00a0country’s most\u00a0well-known\u00a0queer voices in\u00a0the\u00a0Canadian literary\u00a0\u2014 he has produced 70 books of poetry\u00a0and Jack Kerouac\u00a0called him one of “the great poets”\u2014\u00a0and artistic\u00a0scenes.<\/p>\n

“Bill Bissett\u00a0is one of the most significant and under-recognized figures in Vancouver’s conceptual\u00a0art history,” says gallery owner Wil Aballe. “The show is an opportunity\u00a0to place Bill’s visual work in the context it deserves, alongside the city’s broader lineage of conceptualism\u00a0\u2026\u00a0It’s\u00a0also part of a longer-term commitment of my gallery to bridge Vancouver’s historically\u00a0significant\u00a0artists with the emerging Canadian scene we\u00a0represent\u00a0today.”<\/p>\n

\"Originally<\/p>\n

Originally painted in 2020 by Montreal artist Kevin Ledo, this mural of Admired St\u00f3:lo musician and artist Inez Louis is one of many murals that grace historic downtown Chilliwack.<\/p>\n

Chilliwack Mural Festival<\/p>\n

Where: Historic downtown Chilliwack<\/a><\/p>\n

When: Aug. 14-16<\/p>\n

While obviously not a gallery experience, this event brings art to the streets for a three-day festival of large-scale murals from emerging and established Canadian and international artists. Set in historic downtown Chilliwack<\/a>. The event includes all sorts of vendors, performances, and flat-out family fun. Visit chilliwackmuralfestival.com<\/a> for more info.<\/p>\n
