Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit Australia amid new Trump trade threats

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Australia next month, as both nations face the renewed threat of Donald Trump’s trade tariffs.

The Liberal Prime Minister will be welcomed by Anthony Albanese in Canberra on March 3 for a three-day state visit.

He is expected to address parliament in the nation’s capital, before travelling to Sydney.

Mr Albanese described Canada as “one of Australia’s closest friends”, built on trust and “a shared commitment to supporting stability across the Indo-Pacific and beyond”.

“As our countries face new challenges and opportunities, we must deepen our co-operation with partners to promote our national interests,” he said.

“I look forward to discussing ways to build on our existing co-operation with Canada to shape the next stage of this key relationship.”

The government has sought to tout Mr Carney’s visit as an opportunity to strengthen co-operation on investment, economic security, defence, and critical minerals, against a backdrop of renewed trade threats from US President Donald Trump.

Last week, Mr Trump announced a new 15 per cent global tariff after an earlier 10 per cent regime was knocked down by the US Supreme Court.

Canada, which Trump has repeatedly called the “51st state”, is nonetheless facing a number of separate tariffs, particularly on its car and truck industries.

A number of counter tariffs on US auto goods are also in-effect.

Mr Carney has in recent weeks positioned himself at the head of a new order of “middle powers” following a rousing speech at the Davos economic summits, which includes staunch US allies such as France and the United Kingdom.

He called on governments to “stop invoking rules-based international order as though it still functions as advertised.

“Call it what it is – a system of intensifying great power rivalry, where the most powerful pursue their interests, using economic integration as coercion.”

He continued: “We know the old order is not coming back.”

By contrast, Mr Albanese has enjoyed mostly cordial ties with the US President.

Australian beef has until now been exempt from trade tariffs.

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag" href="https://www.theaustralian.com.au/topics/donald-trump"
