Join us each week to test your knowledge of the stories making headlines. Our business reporters come up with the questions, and you can show us what you know.

This week: Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada seem to be in vogue again, the U.S. Fed delivered its interest rate decision and the Major Projects Office has approved a new proposal. Take our quiz and find out what happened in business.

1Prime Minister Mark Carney likes to say that everything is on the table when it comes to trade negotiations with the United States. But what did he just rule out using as a bargaining chip?

a. Energy

b. Dairy quotas

c. Defence spending

d. Airline access

a. Mr. Carney ruled out restricting Canada’s oil and gas supply to the U.S. Mr. Carney’s government is also planning to scrap a tax on online streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, the latest in a series of concessions to U.S. trade demands for which Canada has not received anything in return.

2U.S. President Donald Trump keeps finding new targets for his tariffs. Which edible Canadian product is now in his sights?

a. Maple syrup

b. Lentils

c. Whey

d. Venison

c. The Trump administration says it intends to impose 50-per-cent tariffs on hundreds of Canadian products, including a range of proteins such as whey. The move is all about muscle – literally. There is a global demand for protein, driven by “manosphere” fitness influencers and the introduction of weight loss drugs. U.S. suppliers of whey are sold out of stocks for the remainder of the year, and prices of high-protein whey have climbed 162 per cent since the start of 2025.

3Why did shares of Canadian gold miner Allied Gold Corp. plunge this week?

a. Its chief executive departed

b. It announced disappointing results at its Mali mine site

c. It announced a takeover deal

d. Its proposed takeover deal fell through

d. Allied Gold shares plunged more than 18 per cent after the company called off its $5.5-billion takeover deal with Zijin Gold International. Allied blamed China’s foreign investment regulator for dragging its feet on approving the deal.

4University of Toronto graduate Ilya Sutskever had a very good week. What did he just do?

a. Arranged for $5-billion in funding for his new startup

b. Announced a major new gold discovery

c. Won the Turing Prize

d. Was named head of OpenAi

a. Mr. Sutskever, OpenAI’s former chief scientist, has launched Safe Superintelligence, a company devoted to developing machines that can think better than humans. This week, the giant chip maker Nvidia agreed to make a US$5-billion equity investment in his fledgling company. It is an impressive vote of confidence in Mr. Sutskever, who grew up in Canada and earned a PhD in computer science from the University of Toronto.

5The U.S. Federal Reserve agreed this week to hold interest rates steady. But there was a notable amount of dissension around the central bank’s decision. How many members of the Fed’s 12-person Open Market Committee wanted to hike interest rates?

a. Two

b. Three

c. Four

d. Five

b. Three members preferred a quarter-percentage-point hike in interest rates. Their dissent is understandable. Inflation in the U.S. continues to exceed the Fed’s 2 per cent target, which would ordinarily suggest that higher rates are needed to cool the economy. The problem is that U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his strong preference for lower rates. That leaves new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh with a tough call to make. So far, though, he seems mainly to be confusing markets. Yields on U.S. 30-year bonds jumped to a 19-year high following Mr. Warsh’s rather baffling press conference this week.

6FIFA President Gianni Infantino has angered much of the soccer-loving world with his plans to sell off a piece of the World Cup to private investors for US$20-billion. Who is bankrolling the privatization effort?

a. A Saudi Arabian prince

b. A Russian oligarch

c. Mr. Infantino’s son

d. U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law’s brother

d. The effort is being bankrolled by Joshua Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law. A White House link is not a huge surprise given that Mr. Infantino has worked hard in recent months to ingratiate himself with the president and his associates. However, the cozy relationship between the FIFA chief and Mr. Trump may not be enough to win approval for the partial privatization of the World Cup, given that a host of international soccer organizations have already expressed their indignation with the idea. Oh, if only we could settle this with penalty kicks.

7According to a recent TD Bank study, how many Canadians say they want their partner to sign a prenup or cohabitation agreement?

a. About one in 10

b. About one in three

c. About three in four

d. Nearly everyone

b. The study found that 31 per cent of Canadians say they want their partner to sign a prenup or cohabitation agreement, but the gap between interest and action is huge. Only four per cent of those polled said they had actually signed a prenup.

8Brookfield Asset Management said this week it raised US$2-billion for a fund that will invest in:

a. Quantum computing

b. The Middle East

c. Canadian space launches

d. Chinese AI companies

b. Despite the threat from the U.S.-Iran war, Brookfield is pressing ahead with its expansion in the Middle East, raising money for a regional private equity fund and investing in energy infrastructure.

9Markets are crazy, part one: Which high-flying stock market tumbled more than 10 per cent this week?

a. The U.S.-based Nasdaq index

b. The Canada-based S&P/TSX Index

c. The Japan-based Nikkei index

d. The South Korea-based KOSPI

d. South Korean shares tumbled nearly 11 per cent on Tuesday as a global selloff in chipmakers hammered SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. The benchmark KOSPI has gone on a tear this year, fuelled by the market’s infatuation with computer chipmakers – a love affair that now seems to be ending. The Korean benchmark has lost a third of its value since mid-June. Yet it is still up 30 per cent on the year.

10Markets are crazy, part two: Which Chinese company went public this week and promptly soared 466 per cent?

a. Moonshot

b. DeepSeek

c. CXMT

d. Alibaba

c. Computer chip maker CXMT is now China’s most valuable listed company. Its strong debut provides a gauge of how much investors are willing to pay for a key piece of China’s tech industry.

11Online trade platform Questrade Financial Group announced plans this week to introduce Canada’s first:

a. Prediction market for financial events

b. Quantum computing fund

c. AI-connected brokerage accounts

d. AI-managed mutual fund

c. Questrade Financial Group Inc. is rolling out what it says is Canada’s first direct connection between brokerage accounts and popular AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT. The Questrade feature will let customers ask AI assistants questions about their portfolios, market conditions and watchlists.

12Which major project won approval from Ottawa this week?

a. A northern Ontario nickel mine

b. An East Coast port

c. An Alberta-to-Ontario oil pipeline

d. A B.C. nuclear power plant

a. The federal government is giving Canada Nickel Co. Inc. the go-ahead to build a new nickel mine in northern Ontario, according to sources. The Crawford mine will be located about 40 kilometres north of Timmins in northeastern Ontario. It is expected to be the biggest nickel mine in the Western world once it is built.

    How well did you do?

Answer all of the questions to see your result

This wasn’t your week, but that’s okay!
