Three African Lion cubs have been born at Blackpool Zoo – the first to be born there in more than a decade.<\/p>\n
African Lions are currently classified as vulnerable in the wild, with the population having declined significantly over recent decades owing to loss of habitat, Human-Wildlife Conflict, and a reduction in natural prey, according to zoo experts.<\/p>\n
The cubs’ mother, Hira, “unusually” gave birth outside during the day on Sunday, meaning some areas of their habitat are currently off-limits to visitors in order to protect the welfare of the newborn cubs.<\/p>\n
Section manager Adam Kenyon said staff at the zoo are “absolutely delighted” with the new arrivals.<\/p>\n
The cubs’ father, Khari, was the last African Lion to be born at the zoo – in 2015 – and has remained “a firm favourite with both our team and our visitors” said Kenyon.<\/p>\n
“So his journey to fatherhood makes this moment even more special.”<\/p>\n
“We know visitors will be excited to meet the cubs,” he said, but added, “their welfare has to come first”.<\/p>\n
“The partial closure is being reviewed on a daily basis, but even when the habitat is opened, visitors will be very lucky to see them – as Hira is keeping them safely tucked away in these early days of their life.”<\/p>\n
