A tourist plane has crashed in Peru, leaving 13 people dead, according to local authorities.<\/p>\n
The aircraft went down in a field near Nazca, a city on Peru’s<\/a> southern coast famous for its archaeological and tourist attractions.<\/p>\n Authorities said the plane was flying over the Nazca Lines, a series of ancient geoglyphs carved in the desert, which can only be fully appreciated from the air.<\/p>\n The small plane took \u200boff from Pisco airport but lost contact with the control tower minutes later, local news outlet RPP reported.<\/p>\n The crash occurred at about 12.55pm local time on Saturday, when the aircraft was preparing to return from the sightseeing flight.<\/p>\n Footage shared on social media showed the smoking wreckage of what appeared to be a small plane.<\/p>\n The plane \u200bwas carrying 11 passengers and two pilots, according to Peru’s Ministry \u200bof Commerce and Tourism.<\/p>\n Firefighters and police officers raced to the scene to \u200cextinguish the fire and launch rescue efforts.<\/p>\n The crash site is in the area \u200bof Pueblo Viejo, around six kilometres from the \u200ccity of Nazca and 12 kilometres from the Nazca Lines site.<\/p>\n Read more from Sky News: The reason behind the crash remains unknown and local authorities said an investigation will be launched.<\/p>\n The small aircraft belonged to the local Peruvian airline Aerodiana.<\/p>\n On its website the airline says that it has offered scenic flights over the Nazca Lines for the past 14 years, using Cessna Grand Caravan planes.<\/p>\n The Nazca Lines, enormous drawings and geometric figures etched \u200binto desert plains in the south of the country, are \u200bone of Peru’s main tourist destinations, attracting about 100,000 visitors annually.<\/p>\n Flights over the Nazca Lines departing from the nearby Maria Reiche Airport had been suspended on Friday due \u2060to winds exceeding 40 kph (25 mph), which kicked \u200bup dust and reduced visibility.<\/p>\n This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly.<\/p>\n Please refresh the page for the fullest version.<\/p>\n You can receive breaking news alerts on a smartphone or tablet via the Sky News app<\/a>.
