We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Flight attendants working for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/bulletin\/news\/west-jet-cancellations-compensation-b2974438.html\">WestJet<\/a>, Canada\u2019s second-biggest airline, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/westjet-flight-cancellations-compensation-b2974334.html\">went on strike<\/a> after their union and the carrier failed to reach a new contract deal \u2014 with pay as the key issue in the dispute. <\/p>\n<p>Over 4,000 flight attendants walked off the job Sunday, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents 4,400 cabin crew at the carrier, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cupescfp\/posts\/pfbid02tu6Wr3VG4qsbHQFzSaJVTqrJ1tY2KKETfcHjhASqRjhLfmMiUKefU1KbWkbStJpGl\">announced on Facebook.<\/a> WestJet <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/westjet-recline-seats-charge-b2845884.html\">canceled 309 flights as of early Sunday,<\/a> disrupting travel plans during a three-day weekend in Canada. <\/p>\n<p>The dispute centers around how flight attendants should be paid for duties performed while the plane is still on the ground. The union argues some of that work is unpaid, while WestJet says its staff is compensated through a \u201ccredit hour\u201d system \u2014 instead of an hourly rate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tried until the very last minute to get a fair deal that recognizes the value of the work cabin crews do,\u201d said Alia Hussain, CUPE 8125 President. \u201cWestJet\u2019s offer did not go far enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are on strike because we believe we deserve better. We are ready to go back to the table to settle. We hope the federal government will not interfere and will let the bargaining process run its course.
