An impressive defensive effort and Son Heung-Min’s fourth goal of the season nearly secured all three points for the Black & Gold, but a second-half penalty kick from Thomas Müller ensured the rivals split the spoils at BC Place.

LAFC began the game conceding ground and possession to the hosts but was rarely troubled thanks to stout defensive work across the board. On the occasions when Vancouver was able to craft an opportunity in the opening half hour, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was on hand to make a pair of crucial saves. Centerbacks Aaron Long and Ryan Porteous were also steady, making numerous clearances and imperative interventions.

With its defense setting a strong foundation, LAFC made the most of its one first-half shot. In the 37th minute, Jacob Shaffelburg’s pressure on Vancouver defender Tristan Blackmon created a turnover in the Whitecaps’ half that Denis Bouanga pounced on to drive the ball toward goal. After entering the left side of the box, Bouanga laid the ball off for Son, who let it roll across his body before pirouetting and smashing a shot into the right side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

After the break, LAFC set about erecting the same defensive structure that earned the team clean sheets in two of its three previous matches since returning from the World Cup break. Although the defense did not concede from open play, Vancouver found a way to score via the penalty spot.

In the 74th minute, Yevhen Cheberko was whistled for making contact with Müller in the LAFC box, and the German legend deposited the resulting spot kick into the lower right corner to draw the Whitecaps level at 1-1.

Minutes later, Mathieu Choinère nearly restored LAFC’s lead when he went for goal from near midfield, but his shot floated over the bar. Lloris was called on to make one more quality save to preserve the 1-1 scoreline and earn the Black & Gold a valuable point on the road.

LAFC now takes another break from MLS play for Phase One of the 2026 Leagues Cup. The Black & Gold will face three Liga MX clubs at BMO Stadium over the next week and a half: first tackling Chivas Guadalajara at 7:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Aug. 5, before a rematch with Toluca FC, who knocked LAFC out of this season’s Concacaf Champions Cup, at 8:10 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 8, and final group match against Querétaro at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

All three games will be available to watch on Apple TV as well as Coupang Play and SPOTV for fans in Korea. Local radio coverage will be available on 710 AM ESPN LA, the ESPN App (English), 980 AM La Mera Mera (Spanish), and K-Radio 1230 AM (Korean), with the match against Chivas available nationally on SiriusXM FC 157 and SiriusXM Soccer en Español 1999.

Tonight’s match against Vancouver will re-air locally in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 5:30 p.m. PT on FOX 11 Plus (KCOP-TV Ch. 13). For more LAFC stories, fans can tune into LAFC Weekly, a 30-minute magazine show that gives viewers an in-depth look at the Black & Gold, every Saturday at 10 p.m. PT on FOX 11 Plus.

Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) earned a 1-1 draw on the road against the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps…

[15
477,116,95,48553
post-153426","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vancouver","tag-match-recap","tag-news","tag-vancouver","tag-vanvslafc-08-01-2026
["GET
