A man from Wigston has been arrested on suspicion of a terrorism offence, police have said.<\/p>\n
Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) said it had arrested a 27-year-old man on Monday on suspicion of expressing support for the proscribed organisation Daesh – also known as Islamic State.<\/p>\n
CTPSE added that officers were currently searching a residential property in Wigston in connection with the investigation.<\/p>\n
The operation, which was led by CTPSE, was supported by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands and Leicestershire Police.<\/p>\n
Insp Chris Day, from Leicestershire Police, said: “I appreciate arrests of this nature may cause some people in the community to feel concerned however this arrest today took place as part of a pre-planned operation.<\/p>\n
“We are working to support our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing as their investigation continues.”<\/p>\n
He said residents may notice an “increased police presence while search activity takes place” and anyone with concerns or information they think might be relevant should contact police.<\/p>\n
The arrested man remains in police custody, CTPSE added.<\/p>\n
