In the latest retreat from the world stage that is set to benefit China, President Donald Trump has decided to shut down at least five diplomatic missions in Canada, Japan, Indonesia, Africa, and the Caribbean. He plans to close a total of 30 embassies and consulates worldwide as part of his ‘America First’ agenda. <\/p>\n

Reuters reported that the Department of State has notified Congress that it has decided to close the US embassy in St George’s, Grenada; consulates in Medan, Indonesia; Winnipeg, Canada; and Nagoya, Japan; as well as the embassy branch office in Douala, Cameroon.<\/p>\n

The downsizing comes after the Trump administration shut down dozens of bureaus last year and fired hundreds of diplomats.<\/p>\n

The dismantling of the US diplomatic infrastructure could be the tip of the iceberg as the Trump administration plans to shut down up to 30 embassies and consulates around the world as part of its ‘America First’ agenda. Critics have said the continuing downsizing is a blunder that could prove irreversible.<\/p>\n

As Firstpost previously covered<\/a>, the Trump administration last year planned to shut down 10 embassies, 17 consulates, and three other diplomatic missions, including in regions such as West Asia and Africa, where the United States is heavily involved in counter-terrorism operations against jihadist groups.<\/p>\n

At a time when China is expanding its diplomatic footprint across the world, Trump is shrinking the American presence by shutting down bureaus, closing embassies and consulates, terminating programmes such as US Aid, and firing hundreds of diplomats.<\/p>\n

Such a withdrawal in the name of budget optimisation creates a vacuum that China has sought to fill, increasing its influence in critical regions such as the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.<\/p>\n

Under Xi Jinping, China has already overtaken the United States in terms of diplomatic outposts, with 274 missions around the world compared with 271 US missions by 2024. As Trump continues to cede more ground, Chinese influence is set to grow further.<\/p>\n

As China expert Prof Tej Pratap Singh previously told Firstpost<\/a>, power does not remain in a vacuum and, if the United States leaves a theatre such as Europe or Africa, China is going to enter that theatre.<\/p>\n
