OTTAWA, Aug. 04, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — OTTAWA, Aug. 4, 2026 \u2014\u00a0Even the most enthusiastic hiker would be hard pressed to cover 100,000\u00a0kilometres\u00a0in\u00a030 days. But\u00a0could\u00a0a nationwide community\u00a0hit\u00a0that lofty goal?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The organization behind Canada\u2019s national trail system\u00a0believes it can.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trans Canada Trail has launched its second annual Great Canadian Hike<\/a>, inviting people across the country to get active, explore the outdoors and raise funds to support the world\u2019s longest trail. Registration and donations<\/a> are now open for the nationwide challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After more than tripling the inaugural campaign\u2019s distance goal last year, this year\u2019s Great Canadian Hike aims to collectively log 100,000\u00a0kilometres\u00a0and raise $100,000. Participants can now register individually, create or join a\u00a0team\u00a0and begin fundraising. Starting September 1st, participants will have\u00a030 days\u00a0to track their activity and contribute to the shared national distance goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Unique National Project\u00a0<\/p>\n

Built over generations by communities, volunteers, governments and supporters, the Trans Canada Trail<\/a> is\u00a0shared public infrastructure that connects\u00a0every province and territory. It\u00a0provides\u00a0opportunities for recreation and active transportation, supports local economies and tourism, and helps people connect with nature and one another.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Funds raised through the Great Canadian Hike\u00a0will\u00a0help support projects across Canada, including damage repair and maintenance, accessibility improvements, trail extensions, greenway development, climate resilience work and training for the local\u00a0groups\u00a0and volunteers who manage individual sections of the Trail.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By taking part, Canadians can enjoy the trails and natural spaces they value while helping ensure the Trans Canada Trail\u00a0remains\u00a0connected,\u00a0accessible\u00a0and resilient for generations to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Building on Year One\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 2025 Great Canadian Hike challenged Canadians to collectively cover 30,000\u00a0kilometres\u00a0in\u00a030 days.\u00a0Participants reached that goal in just eight days.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By the end of the campaign, more than 2,100 participants had logged 94,076\u00a0kilometres\u00a0while raising more than\u00a0$80,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year, Trans Canada Trail is\u00a0building\u00a0on\u00a0that momentum.\u00a0Participation\u00a0is free and designed to fit a range of interests, experience\u00a0levels\u00a0and abilities. Participants can set their own distance and fundraising targets and take part\u00a0anywhere in Canada\u00a0\u2014 whether\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0on\u00a0a backcountry trek, a\u00a0neighbourhood\u00a0bike ride, or a paddle on a local waterway.\u00a0<\/p>\n
