TORONTO, Aug 5 (Reuters) – When his teleprompter malfunctioned on Wednesday in the middle of a news \u200cconference on housing policy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark \u200cCarney smiled and took a swift jab at U.S. President Donald Trump, \u200bsaying, “I do not view this as a conspiracy.”<\/p>\n
Carney’s remark was an apparent reference to Trump’s demands for an investigation after he encountered a halted escalator and a non-functioning teleprompter \u200clast year at \u2060the United Nations General Assembly, where he delivered a speech.<\/p>\n
“I would like to inform you \u2060that the teleprompter has ceased to function. Unlike a certain world leader, I do not view this as a \u200bconspiracy,” Carney \u200bsaid to laughs at \u200bthe news conference in \u200cToronto.<\/p>\n
Carney’s office and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
Relations between Canada and the U.S. have been fraught since Trump returned to the White House last year, slapping broad tariffs on the northern neighbor and \u200ccalling for it to become \u200bthe 51st U.S. state.<\/p>\n
Carney, who has \u200bsaid he would \u200bfight Trump’s trade policies, has worked to \u200clessen Canada’s diplomatic and economic \u200bdependency on the \u200bU.S. He also drew international attention for declaring the end of a rules-based global order and criticizing \u200bgreat powers for \u200cusing “economic integration as weapons.”<\/p>\n
