The order barred protesters from blocking access to the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Tsawak-qin Forestry logging site.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/walbran-cougar-camp-logging-resumes-9.6995575\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Tsawak-qin Forestry logging site.<\/a> Twelve protesters were arrested in total.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Kenni Apt was sentenced to 12 months&#8217; probation, with 75 hours of community service or a fine of $2,250. They were arrested after attaching themselves to a large wooden cougar statue within the injunction area, intending to block logging activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Apt says they feel good about their sentence, but they&#8217;re sad that they won&#8217;t be able to visit the valley, which is located nearly 100 kilometres northwest of Victoria, any time soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It is actually probably the worst part of this,&#8221; they said. &#8220;I miss the valley greatly. She was arrested after being found in an elevated sling between two trees within the injunction area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The blockade in Walbran Valley was linked to the same organizers behind the nearby <a data-ylk=\"slk:Fairy Creek anti-logging blockade;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/fairy-creek-protest-largest-act-of-civil-disobedience-1.6168210\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Fairy Creek anti-logging blockade<\/a> on southwest Vancouver Island,\u00a0which saw thousands arrested in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Both Crown and defence lawyers agreed that the Fairy Creek blockade sentences should be taken into consideration as a baseline. Crown proposed double what was given to those arrested in 2021, while defence argued for a moderate increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ben Isitt, a lawyer representing a number of Walbran protesters, including Apt and Barak, says the judge for this case, Anthony Saunders, was following similar sentencing as <a data-ylk=\"slk:Justice Douglas Thompson did with the Fairy Creek trials;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/b-c-fairy-creek-court-civil-liberties-injunction-1.6192827\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Justice Douglas Thompson did with the Fairy Creek trials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Isitt says protesters in 2021 were sentenced to between 25 and 100 hours community service or fines between $750 and $3,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For those in elevated devices, there was jail time between four and 10 days due to the risk it imposed on themselves and the RCMP, who needed to remove them.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"New blockade camp named &quot;Cougar camp&quot; has been set up in the Walbran valley on western Vancouver Island to halt logging of old-growth timber in the area.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/cbc.ca\/5c374fc593edddb4c24078406c1b38bf.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A large cougar statue was set up at the blockade in the Walbran Valley on western Vancouver Island in 2025 to halt logging of old-growth timber in the area.
