The report only stated that the 30-year-old “is on the radar” of TFC, although no formal offer has been confirmed nor reported elsewhere.

Tapia only joined Al Wasl last summer after departing Spanish side Leganés, signing a two-year deal with the Dubai-based club. His arrival was viewed as a real coup for the UAE side given his experience in both La Liga and the Eredivisie.

The defensive midfielder has long been one of Peru’s most important players, earning 95 caps for his country since 2015 while also featuring for Feyenoord, Celta Vigo and CD Leganés. His ability to shield the back line and dictate tempo from deep would address an area TFC has looked to strengthen in recent transfer windows. It could also allow Jose Cifuentes to play a more advanced role in Fraser’s midfield.

Related Read: Despite ‘up and down’ performances, Toronto FC believe they are trending well

Tapia has remained a regular starter for Al Wasl this season despite the club’s inconsistent form — they were bounced by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr from the AFC Cup last week.
